There is just a year to go until HBO’s Harry Potter is expected to air, but this could also spell exciting news for fans of Hogwarts Legacy 2, with the two media forms reportedly set to coincide. Whether this means that the highly anticipated sequel will launch alongside the show remains to be seen, but for now, we can assume that they will be linked in at least some capacity.
In recent months, development on Hogwarts Legacy 2 has seemingly ramped up, with Avalanche Software hiring a brand-new Community Manager. However, with the Warner Bros. acquisition courtesy of Paramount also set to be finalized in September, it remains uncertain what this means for the future of its Harry Potter IP, and more specifically, the Hogwarts Legacy sequel.
Put simply, the existence of Hogwarts Legacy 2 as a whole remains uncertain. We may know that it is in development, but we do not know what it will be about, what time period it will cover, or when it will be released. It is worth remembering that the events of Hogwarts Legacy took place over a century before the events of the beloved Harry Potter movie and book series and the upcoming HBO adaptation is expected to recover the time period once again. However, if Hogwarts Legacy 2 is set to “coincide” with Harry Potter, does this mean that the RPG sequel will fast-forward to present day? Or, as some fans suspect, the television show will merely take inspiration from the hit video game.
The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry we see in the movies looks quite different from the one featured in Hogwarts Legacy. Iconic locations like the Great Hall, Gryffindor Common Room, Quidditch Pitch, and Hogsmeade Station feature very different designs, but this makes sense considering that players will want to explore the open-world whilst the movie only showed us certain locations from an artistic perspective. As such, fans believe that Harry Potter will take inspiration from Hogwarts Legacy designs as opposed to being a stark copy of the beloved movie series from the 2000s.
As such, one user over on r/HarryPotteronHBO showed a series of screenshots showcasing the contrast between scenes taken from the Harry Potter trailer to locations found throughout Hogwarts Legacy. Unfortunately, there is no denying that the architecture and interiors are completely different, with the show seemingly going its own way when it comes to set design.
“I chose a few locations – those shots where the layout of the place is clearly visible,” the user explained. “Okay, maybe it has some game-like elements or inspirations, but that’s it. Architecturally, it’s completely different. I’m also hoping for a different, more book-like exterior layout.” However, for one user, they believe that each Harry Potter iteration having its own design is worth praising. “Would be a bit of a waste of time for the set designers if all they did was copy and paste from a video game. I do love how each iteration of the story has its own unique design and style, whilst at the same time, you know it’s Hogwarts and nothing else,” they shared.
For now, it still remains to be seen how Harry Potter and Hogwarts Legacy 2 will “coincide”, but for now, we can at least look forward to the former, which is set to air on HBO in 2027.
