Despite the ongoing resurgence of Westerns, thanks in large part to the dedicated efforts of Taylor Sheridan, one of the best recent examples of the genre remains mostly undiscovered. Sheridan’s Yellowstone is among the most popular shows of the last decade, and its success has inspired not only direct spin-offs, but also a string of imitators on different streaming platforms. These range from neo-Westerns that tackle similar themes to old-fashioned offerings that evoke nostalgia. One movie, however, captured both the raw energy of contemporary titles and the romance of older classics.
The movie was released theatrically in 2021, when it did negligible business at the box office. It starred Tim Blake Nelson as an aging widower who lives peacefully with his son on a farm. But when trouble comes knocking on his door, he has no choice but to embrace his violent past and defend his home. The film was written and directed by the debut filmmaker Potsy Ponciroli, who most recently directed the action film Motor City, starring Alan Ritchson, Shailene Woodley, Ben Foster, Ben McKenzie, and others. His 2021 Western also featured Scott Haze, Trace Adkins, and Stephen Dorff.

Here’s How Long You Have Left To Watch Tim Blake Nelson’s Underrated Western
The movie we’re talking about is Old Henry. It holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Led by a reliably solid performance from Tim Blake Nelson,Old Henry serves up a supple cut of vintage Western rawhide.” Don’t let the title fool you, as it did Nelson when he was offered the titular role. While Old Henry might seem like a standard Western stand-off movie, it’s anything but. It combines the themes of Logan with the mythology of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Comparing it to the classic Western television series Rawhide, Collider’s Liam Gaughan wrote in a retrospective review that the film’s “reveals are delicately interwoven into the narrative, as Henry only reveals the truth about his past to Wyatt when it is absolutely necessary to their survival. This allows both Wyatt and the viewer to reckon with the emotional ramifications of what they have learned.” You can watch Old Henry on Paramount+ in the United States, but it’ll be removed from the platform on June 4.
