Hulu has an 8-hour psychological drama that subtly has one of the best TV casts ever. The show was Hulu’s play at having their version of Big Little Lies, a smart, female-led, book-adapted limited series. Hulu was trying to expand its brand beyond The Handmaid’s Tale, so the streamer was seeking high-end, buzzy, star-driven projects.

Little Fires Everywhere was adapted from Celeste Ng’s novel, following a suburban mother whose carefully curated life is upended when a mysterious, free-spirited artist and her daughter move in, igniting a clash over motherhood, identity, and belonging. Reese Witherspoon, who produced and starred in Big Little Lies, did the same with Little Fires Everywhere.

Little Fires Everywhere pushes into more overtly ambitious territory by tackling race head-on, even if that directness can feel heavy-handed next to the more elegantly executed Big Little Lies.
