The X-Men‘s metallic hero Colossus receives a drastic power and appearance overhaul, gaining a new set of powers he’s not accustomed to but is very familiar with. Piotr Rasputin has been a cornerstone of the X-Men since his introduction in Giant-Size X-Men #1, where he joined the second generation of Professor X students. Known for his organic steel transformation and a gentle, artistic soul that contrasts his brute strength, Colossus has lent his power to a vast range of Marvel mutant factions, including the core X-Men, the European-based Excalibur, and even Magneto’s extremist Acolytes during a dark period of personal grief.
While he is most recognized for his classic red-and-yellow circus-inspired leotard, Piotr has also sported the rugged, shirtless look of the Outback era, the heavy armor of a Juggernaut-enhanced avatar of Cyttorak, and the sleek black-and-gold aesthetic of the Marvel NOW! era. In the original Ultimate Universe, Piotr is a smuggler for the Russian mafia who relies on the drug Banshee to grant him super-strength. And in the second Ultimate Universe, a villainous Colossus rules the Eurasian Republic as part of the Maker’s Council.
Colossus is one of the X-Men heroes with the least varied history of costumes and power-ups. After all, super-strength and enhanced endurance are pretty straightforward mutations. However, Piotr Rasputin is no stranger to major changes to his appearance and physiology.
Colossus & Magik Swap Powers And Join A New X-Men Team
The Uncanny X-Men #27; Written by Gail Simone; Art by Luciano Vecchio & Matthew Wilson
The X-Men have had a lot of shake-ups in their recent history, from the Fall of Krakoa to Magneto’s loss of his powers in From the Ashes. One of the mutant teams who have endured is the Louisiana faction, who have fought a variety of mystical threats, including Lady Darkhold and her team of classic horror monsters. In The Uncanny X-Men #27, the latest generation of X-Men happen to fight a new wave of terrifying Sentinel-Human hybrids with the help of a fellow mutant team, which features Colossus and Magik in swapped uniforms and with swapped powers.
This new team is led by Professor S, the Pteranodon-Human mutate hybrid Dr. Karl Lykos aka Sauron. The Soulsword-wearing Piotr Rasputin and the metal-clad Ilyana Rasputin are accompanied by Theressa Cassidy a.k.a. Syrin and John Proudstar a.k.a. Thunderbird, who both wear their classic costumes and appear to retain their original abilities. For how long Colossus and Magik will keep their swapped costumes and powers remains to be seen, but this major change is worth at least one full on-page battle following their arrival.
Another Mutant Power Could Come In Handy For Colossus
Many Mutant Characters Have Gained Useful Secondary And Tertiary Mutations Throughout The Years
The concept of secondary mutations has become a vital part of mutant evolution, and it has helped established characters undergo radical transformations. While Colossus remains a physical powerhouse, his proximity to the mystical realms of his sister, Magik, poses great potential for growth. If Piotr were to develop a secondary mutation tied to his family’s magical bloodline, his organic steel could potentially act as a conduit for Limbo’s energies, possibly allowing him to forge Soul-Armor that protects against psychic and mystical attacks, the two areas where he’s traditionally most vulnerable.
10 Physically Strongest Female X-Men Characters Ever, Ranked
The X-Men have some of the most powerful female Marvel heroes in their ranks, and several of them are just as strong using nothing but their physique.
This wouldn’t be the first time a famous mutant has received a major power-up. Emma Frost was originally a pure telepath, but she famously developed a secondary mutation that allowed her to transform her body into diamond. Beast has undergone multiple tertiary mutations, going from an ape-like form to a feline one; and Angel developed the ability to heal others. A mutant’s DNA is a reactive blueprint that adapts to trauma or extreme environments by granting them new physical or energetic traits.
The pinnacle of mutants’ evolutionary potential is seen in Chimeras, artificial mutants engineered with a combination of elite powers. The most striking example is Rasputin IV, a masterpiece of genetic engineering created by Mr. Sinister. Rasputin IV possesses Colossus’ metal skin, Emma Frost’s telepathy, Unus the Untouchable’s force fields, Kitty Pryde’s intangibility, and Laura Kinney’s healing factor. To complement these traits, and similarly to The Uncanny X-Men #27’s Colossus, Rasputin IV wields Magik’s Soulsword, which makes her a one-woman army.
