Disney+ Just Got the 4.1 Million-View Sci-Fi Streaming Hit It Needed

The following article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord.

This May marks one of the biggest months in Star Wars history. Not only is the franchise making its grand return to theaters with The Mandalorian and Grogu, but it’s seen one of its biggest streaming success stories with Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord. Shadow Lord amassed a whopping 4.1 million global views during its first week of streaming, and it’s managed to reside in Disney+’s Top 10 list during its Season 1 run. On top of that, it’s the highest-rated Star Wars project on Rotten Tomatoes, sitting at an impressive 98%. It’s no surprise that Shadow Lord was renewed for a second season, as it’s helped put the Star Wars franchise back into the spotlight.

Shadow Lord takes place a year after the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and follows Sam Witwer‘s titular dark sider as he attempts to rebuild his criminal organization, the Shadow Collective. This quest brings Maul to the planet Jannix and into the orbit of Jedi Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) and her master, Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert). Also in the mix is lawman Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura) and his droid partner, “Two-Boots” (Richard Ayodade), not to mention the looming shadow of the Empire. The mix of hardboiled crime, philosophical musings, and intense lightsaber fights makes Shadow Lord one of the most unique Star Wars shows in existence.

‘Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord’ Continues a Trend in Star Wars Animation

When Darth Maul first appeared in Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, he didn’t amount to much more than a great character design and a cool fight scene. That changed when he made his grand return in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as he was driven by his desire to surpass his former master, Darth Sidious, and a burning hatred for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Shadow Lord continues to peel back Maul’s layers, especially in his interactions with others. Whether it’s through his subtle manipulations or the direct threat of ending someone’s life, Maul usually manages to stay ten steps ahead of everyone else. Lucasfilm Animation Vice President Athena Portillo discussed Maul’s everlasting appeal during an interview with IGN, comparing him to a pair of iconic horror villains in the process:

“My joke for the Lucasfilm Animation team is it’s kind of like Michael Meyers or like Jason Voorhees. Like you keep killing them, but they keep coming back. There is that threat that’s there, right? I mean, it’s Star Wars, right? So Darth Maul has passed away so many times, but he does keep coming back.”

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Shadow Lord is the dynamic between Maul and Devon. At first, Devon is repulsed by Maul, but over the course of Season 1, she comes to see him as the lesser of two evils, or rather a necessary evil. In turn, he draws parallels to how he was cast aside by Sidious to how she and the other Jedi are considered traitors to the galaxy after the Clone Wars. With Shadow Lord, showrunner Matt Michnovetz and series creator Dave Filoni are providing a dark spin on the classic hero’s journey that often fuels Star Wars stories, and setting the stage for Devon to become the infamous Darth Talon.

‘Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord’ Had a Perfect Release Strategy

Another element that helped make Shadow Lord a must-watch series is its release schedule. Season 1 dropped two episodes a week starting on April 6, leading up to the finale on May 4th. Given that May 4th is also known as “Star Wars Day,” it’s only fitting that the series would wrap on that day – and it more than delivered, as fans finally got to witness Maul cross lightsabers with none other than Darth Vader. On top of that, April was jam-packed with genre shows, including Invincible, The Boys, and Daredevil: Born Again. Shadow Lord essentially kicked off a week of pop culture programming for an entire month! While Athena Portillo has said that Season 2 of Shadow Lord might take longer than expected, the possibilities are endless. Now that Maul is training Devon as his apprentice and continuing to rebuild the Shadow Collective, there are plenty of plot threads to explore. Given that Maul will also wind up on the planet Malachor by the time Star Wars Rebels begins, this is also a series that could last for many seasons. He might be the Shadow Lord, but Darth Maul is also the salvation of Star Wars.
