Set to the soothing and nostalgia notes of Secunda, a recent video shared on YouTube has given us a glimpse at what a next-generation remake for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could look like, and thanks to the advancement of technology and the increased power of the hardware that runs it, it is nothing short of a masterpiece.
With fans still waiting for the next installment in The Elder Scrolls franchise, The Elder Scrolls VI, it is Skyrim that has kept them entertained over the years, with players still flocking to the familiar RPG 15-years after it was first launched. Now, with the news that Bethesda head Todd Howard regrets announcing The Elder Scrolls VI so soon into development, it seems as though it is Skyrim that will remain a home for many for years to come.
However, as mentioned, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is rapidly approaching its 20th anniversary, and with the Bethesda RPG first launched for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it is safe to say that it is pretty outdated, at least visually. Although we did receive a remastered version back in 2016, as well as a Nintendo Switch port and even an Anniversary Edition back in 2021, we have yet to receive a remake, with games that have been out for a lot less time receiving the revamp treatment. So, could The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim be next?
It remains to be seen, but for now, we can take a look at what a next-gen version of Skyrim could look like thanks to YouTuber Digital Dreams. Shared to their YouTube account just last month, we can see the familiar sights and sounds of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thanks to a free community remake, complete with ultra graphics. In the trailer, we can see some of the most iconic locations around Skyrim, as the camera pans across rivers, seas, villages, mountains, dungeons, and more. The results are stunning, keeping the familiar feel of the beloved RPG, but by adding those photorealistic graphics that fans so often seek in modern-day.
Created by Greg Coulthard, this is not an official remake or remaster, but rather a look at what The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim could look like with an Unreal Engine 5 port, and it was not long before viewers took to the comments to share their thoughts on the project.
“People are very opinionated about how they like their Skyrim to look,” the top comment over on YouTube reads. “Some people swear if it doesn’t meet their personal strict yet abstract vanilla plus look, then it lacks soul. Other people like Skyrim to look like a vibrant cartoon, and others photorealistic.. That’s the beauty of Skyrim in 2026. There is a Skyrim mod list for everyone! And some people would do well to remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Another agreed, adding, “I really like how this looks… architectural elements really pop, rain and snowfall look awesome. For me, the more realistic a game looks, the better, because I personally feel it makes it even more immersive. I’ve been playing Skyrim and ESO for many years and what drew me in was the more realistic graphics of the game.”
Mods such as these definitely come down to personal preferance, with others preferring the original look of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. However, it may just give us a glimpse into what we can expect to see with The Elder Scrolls VI… if it ever launches.
