Every Ninja Eye Technique In The Naruto Franchise

[

While it was to be expected that the Naruto franchise would feature some truly fascinating ninja techniques, many weren’t prepared for the vast pool of possibilities offered by ninja eye techniques, aka dōjutsu. Given the first memorable glimpse of such a technique was Kakashi’s sole Sharingan Eye, itself a mystery Sasuke Uchiha found particularly intriguing given they belong only to his clan, Naruto quickly made it clear that dōjutsu would become a major recurring plot point. But beyond these mysterious eyes, the broader franchise would only build it out with a host of fascinating abilities, boasting raw power and tactical advantages.

The primary dōjutsu, the Byakugan, Rinnegan, and Sharingan Eyes and their origins draw back to Hagoromo and Kaguya Ōtsutsuki’s lineage. But one may find that, upon expanding this world and introducing additional Ōtsutsuki, this array of powerful eye techniques would grow from overpowered to outright godly in their reality-altering powers. It’s thus worthwhile to take stock of each of the Naruto franchise’s ninja eye techniques, and precisely what they can do, especially as Boruto: Two Blue Vortex continues to put these to prominent use.

Byakugan

The Hyuga’s Dōjutsu Signals Their Relation to the Ōtsutsuki

Hinata Hyuga using her Byakugan

Possessed by members of the Hyuuga clan such as Neji and Hinata, the Byakugan’s primary purpose is to give the user a deeper level of sight. The technique can be used to see across great distances, pinpoint chakra, and penetrate through barriers. In battle, the Byakugan can track an opponent moving at great speed or attempting to stay out of sight.

The Hyuuga eye is depicted as being entirely white and becomes strained when activated, but mixed-blood descendants such as Boruto‘s Himawari can have the ability to transform regular eyes into the Byakugan. When compared to the Sharingan, the Byakugan offers greater chakra visibility, enabling the user to distinguish certain types of clones from the original, along with specific chakra signatures.

Sharingan

The Uchiha’s Legacy and Curse

Perhaps the most famous Naruto ninja eye technique, the Sharingan is exclusive to the Uchihas but has been stolen or gifted to various others over the course of the narrative. The likes of Sasuke can use Sharingan to copy the techniques of their opponents and to see through illusions and genjutsu. Equally, the Sharingan can also be used as a powerful tool of illusion in its own right.

10 Biggest Naruto Mysteries

The story of Naruto has entertained & inspired countless souls worldwide, but there are several unanswered mysteries that even Boruto doesn’t reveal.

Members of Naruto‘s Uchiha clan must awaken their Sharingan eyes through training and an emotional trigger event. While some of the new abilities in Boruto make the Sharingan look weaker, it is still one of the most powerful dōjutsu in the franchise.

Jōgan

A Mysterious Dōjutsu Whose Power Still Has to Be Revealed

Boruto uses Jogan

In Naruto, all dōjutsu eyes are associated with a particular clan and come with a distinct set of powers, but none are as elusive as the powerful Jōgan technique. Little is known about the true extent of the Jōgan’s power, making it one of Naruto‘s most mysterious dōjutsu. However, due to it only being named and appearing in the anime, it remains unconfirmed in a canonical sense, with Boruto’s latest awakening of his special eye being labeled a Byakugan.

The Jōgan is possessed by Boruto and has been used to detect chakra similarly to the Byakugan, but can also perceive interdimensional rifts. Boruto can also use it like Spider-Man’s Spider Sense, alerting him to danger in battle. With Boruto still learning to master it, there’s likely much more that the Jōgan can do, but this will only be revealed once the true origin of the eye comes to light.

Mangekyō Sharingan

The Peak of the Uchiha’s Power and Tragedy

The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced form of the Sharingan that has been activated and mastered by only a handful of the Uchiha clan. Interestingly, this eye technique is obtained when a particularly gifted and driven Uchiha, such as Sasuke, witnesses the death of a loved one and brings a whole new host of powers forth.

Described as the “heavenly eyes that see the truth of all creation without obstruction”, the Mangekyō Sharingan gives access to techniques such as Amaterasu and Susanoo, while also unlocking unique jutsu that differ between users, such as Obito’s Kamui. Sarada’s awakening of Mangekyō Sharingan in Boruto might also imply that this dōjutsu can be used to nullify certain powers like Eida’s Omnipotence. However, using the Mangekyō Sharingan unchecked can cause severe damage to the user’s regular eyesight.

Rinnegan

A God-like Dōjutsu of Seemingly Limitless Power

A closeup of the Rinnegan of Sasuke Uchiha in Naruto

By recreating the chakra of the Sage of Six Paths, one can possess the god-like power of the Rinnegan. More so than other dōjutsu, the abilities of the Rinnegan seem to differ between users. Pain (Nagato) uses the technique to control multiple bodies, Sasuke uses his Rinnegan to move through space via pattern recognition, and Madara can create a Limbo shadow clone to do his bidding. Many Rinnegan users can also produce black metal rods to wield as weapons or pin down foes.

Boruto: 8 Characters Who Could Achieve Kage Level Power (& 6 Who Won’t)

The new shinobi generation in Boruto has a lot of potential, but not every character on the anime TV series can reach the power level of a Kage.

This Naruto ninja eye technique also boasts extraordinary chakra and ocular power, although it cannot see through certain obstacles like smoke bombs. The Rinnegan is so powerful it can even give its wielder the ability to bring back the dead. Even more of this dōjutsu’s abilities may be revealed soon with Sasuke potentially recovering his Rinnegan soon in Boruto.

Tenseigan

The Evolution of the Byakugan, Fueled by the Ōtsutuki’s Chakra

Introduced in The Last: Naruto the Movie, the Tenseigan is a combination of Ōtsutsuki chakra with the Hyuuga Byakugan and was manifested by Toneri Ōtsutsuki. According to Toneri, the Tenseigan is powerful enough to crash the moon into Earth but also capable of creating new organisms in the aftermath. This power is demonstrated when Toneri animates a stone warrior to battle Naruto. Aside from its control over life and death, the Tenseigan provides Toneri with the ability to fly and control the truth-seeking balls associated with the Sage of Six Paths. In terms of appearance, the Tenseigan turns the featureless Byakugan into blue pupils, resembling overlapping floral patterns.

Rinne-Sharingan

The Peak of All Dōjutsu

Kaguya Does Not Look Happy

Using the power of the Ten-Tails Juubi, extremely powerful wielders like Madara and Kaguya can open the third eye on their forehead to combine the power of the Rinnegan and the Sharingan. Since this extremely powerful combination is so rare in the Naruto universe, only some of its capabilities are known.

The Rinne-Sharingan can be used to cast a worldwide genjutsu spell and also appears to facilitate travel between dimensions. With the incredibly powerful forms characters have achieved in Boruto, hopefully another Rinne-Sharingan user will appear and reveal more of what this dōjutsu can do.

Senrigan

A Subtle Yet Devastating Power

Eida's Senrigan
Boruto-Naruto-Next-Generations-Eida-Senrigan

The latest dōjutsu to be introduced to the series is Eida’s Senrigan. The Senrigan is a powerful form of clairvoyance that allows Eida to witness all events taking place in the world, and she can even view events from the past so long as they didn’t take place before she was born. A notable weakness of the Senrigan is that Eida can’t witness events that take place within spiritual or mental planes, which is why Eida didn’t know that Momoshiki helped Boruto survive Kawaki’s attempt to kill him until she saw other people discussing it.

Something especially noteworthy about the Senrigan is that it isn’t a ninjutsu, but a shinjutsu. Shinjutsu are almighty techniques that all ninjutsu are said to have been based on, with Eida gaining the Senrigan after she was given the DNA of Shibai Otsutsuki, the man considered to be a God among the Otsutsuki. That puts the Senrigan on a much higher scale than other dōjutsu, and even if it lacks the offensive capabilities that other dōjutsu have, it can easily be seen as one of the most powerful techniques in the Naruto franchise.

Naruto: Other Ninja Eye Techniques, Explained

Ketsuryūgan-naruto-eye

Apart from these established ninja eye techniques, there are other, lesser-known dōjutsu that manifest as user-specific abilities, prompting the extent of their powers to remain unique and mysterious. One prominent example is the unnamed dōjutsu used by Isshiki Ōtsutsuki. This technique transforms his iris and pupil yellow, granting a black wheel-like pattern with eight spokes and grants the ability to shrink the wielder or any inanimate object within their sight.

Other examples are the Ketsuryūgan, appearing only in certain individuals of the Chinoike clan, as well as Ranmaru’s kekkei genkai, which makes his eye glow red and grants him penetrative vision and the ability to hinder the Byakugan.

Which Ninja Eye Techniques Are The Strongest In Naruto & Boruto?

Not All Dōjutsu Are Equal

Naruto-Shippuden-Sasuke-Mangekyo-Sharingan

There are a lot of different eye techniques in the Naruto franchise, and as such, there are some that are stronger than others. For starters, the versatility and overall power of the Mangekyo Sharingan and the Rinnegan have made every user of them some of the strongest characters in the franchise, and they both more than earn their reputations as some of the strongest techniques in Naruto and Boruto. Naturally, the Rinne Sharingan, which combines the abilities of the Sharingan and Rinnegan, is in a league of its own, and with how powerful Kaguya was while using it, its immense power can’t be contested.

While Boruto’s art style differs a lot from Naruto’s, the series still delivered some beautiful and memorable covers.

Continuing from that, while the Tenseigan’s abilities have never been fully explored, Toneri could fight on par with Naruto at the peak of his strength and was even directly compared to Madara, so it’s incredibly powerful, as well. Isshiki Otsutsuki’s dōjutsu is also one that hasn’t been fully explored, but with how the power of Sukunahikona and Daikokuten let Isshiki overpower Naruto and Sasuke singlehandedly, Isshiki’s dōjutsu should be seen as incredibly powerful, as well. All of these techniques are related to the Otsutsuki clan, and with how powerful they are, it’s no wonder why they would be so powerful.

Which Ninja Eye Techniques Are The Weakest In Naruto & Boruto?

Sarada's Sharingan
Boruto-Naruto-Next-Generations-Sarada-Sharingan

Regarding which dōjutsu are the weakest in Naruto, that would have to be the Sharingan and Byakugan. The Sharingan is by no means a weak technique, and even the regular version of it gives a person incredible strength and reflexes that are almost impossible to match otherwise. However, the regular Sharingan lacks the inherently overpowered abilities of the Mangekyo Sharingan and other dōjutsu of similar power, so while it’s a powerful technique, it ends up being a weaker eye technique largely in comparison to other ones.

Sharingan and Byakugan will always remain an iconic part of the franchise and Shonen manga as a whole.

The Byakugan also ranks lowly for similar reasons. The ocular techniques provided by it are certainly powerful, but its abilities are incredibly basic compared to even the Sharingan, its most immediate contemporary, and not only that, but the Byakugan obviously lacks the abilities of its evolved form, the Tenseigan. The Byakugan might be known as one of the three great dōjutsu alongside the Sharingan and Rinnegan, but it’s notably lacking in power compared to them and other dōjutsu, so it’s hard to view it as being as powerful as its reputation makes it out to be.

Boruto’s New Series Is Expanding Classic Eye Techniques

One of the coolest advancements featured in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has been the gradual exploration of possible power applications, particularly for the Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan. This is largely to be expected, especially as Sarada Uchiha was bound to unveil her unique spin on it, and given her uniquely granted ability to generate spheres to manipulate gravity and implode opponents via Ohirume, it’s proven to be an incredibly powerful technique capable of handling Human Divine Trees.

Meanwhile, the Rinnegan’s vast pool of abilities continue to be showcased in Boruto’s sequel series, with the Divine Trees’ tangible forms seemingly tied to their Rinnegan Eyes remaining intact. In the case of Two Blue Vortex chapter #33, when Inojin Yamanaka successfully controlled the Mamushi horde, reflecting their killing intent at their eyes using Daemon’s power, the entire clone army disintegrated, leaving only the Thorn Soul Bulb. However, the extent of the Rinnegan’s abilities and their hold on other members, particularly Jura, remains largely a mystery for now.

The Future Of Naruto’s Eye Techniques

While the original Naruto series has ended, Boruto has introduced powerful new dōjutsu and will likely continue to introduce more. Power creep is a constant problem in the Naruto franchise and stronger abilities necessitate the introduction of even stronger dōjutsu to keep the series’ distinctive ocular powers relevant. Luckily, no matter how powerful these new abilities are, Naruto‘s original ocular techniques like the Sharingan and Byakugan will always remain an iconic part of the franchise and shonen manga as a whole.
