Lost’s Real Villain Was Never The Man In Black, And It Took Me 16 Years To See It

[

Lost was one of TV’s most ambitious sci-fi shows, breaking many of TV’s rules by introducing new mysteries before solving earlier ones, then introducing wild card characters and further layers of nuance, until the series gained a reputation for being somewhat confusing. However, while it cannot be denied that Lost is uniquely complex, it is easier to follow than many remember. A harder thing to track is the motivations of many of Lost‘s best villains, some of whom are humans while others are something much more sinister altogether.

Of all Lost‘s great villains, Titus Welliver’s impressive performance in just three episodes of the series has led his mysterious character, The Man in Black, to be recognized as the show’s standout evil character. However, while he is presented as the main threat in the series, he is a victim of his circumstances just as many of the antagonists are, and the real villain is the character responsible for this: Mother (Allison Janney.)

Mother is the earliest known Protector of the Island in Lost, and when the pregnant Claudia washes up on shore, she waits for her to give birth before killing her and taking both her sons for herself. Mother’s deception in keeping the boys’ real parentage a secret is villainous enough, but her further manipulation takes her to evil status. As she shapes the boys to embody good and evil, the son who would become The Man in Black is left trapped on the island with no escape and no support as Mother kills his entire community too.

With Jacob chosen as the next Protector, Mother has passed her responsibility onto him, leaving his brother to be consumed by his own fury, which turns him into the Smoke Monster. The cycle of this family of Protectors killing each other is tragic, but might not have played out in this way had Mother not pitted her sons against each other. Whether Mother is still human or has been turned into something much darker by the island is up for debate, and she remains even more of a mystery than The Man in Black.

The Mother’s Origin Is One Of Lost’s Biggest Unanswered Mysteries

One of the most underrated Lost episodes is “Across the Sea,” which has divided the show’s fans. The episode gives viewers as much clarity as we are going to get about Mother’s origins, and reviewers have described “Across the Sea” as both intriguing and frustrating. Set mostly in the past, while the episode answers several of the biggest questions in the show, like who the corpses are in episode 6 of season 1, it does little to clarify events in the mysterious island’s history, including how Mother got onto the island and became its Protector.

Based on the different civilizations arriving on and impacting the island, Mother lived an unnaturally long life, but it is not clear how long she was really on the island before Claudia arrived, as she is shown to manipulate the truth for her own agenda. Anything she tells the boys could be made up or used to advance her plans for them. The series presents her as deeply connected to the island and its mythology, with more powers than any other Protector has shown, which make her appear Goddess-like and unfathomably ancient.

Despite some frustrating unsolved mysteries, many Lost episodes are better than anything made today, and Mother represents why. Lost goes deeper than most shows, exploring humanity and the nature of good and evil, leaving viewers to question whether Mother was the original embodiment of the island or whether she was an early human, corrupted by its nature. This reflects the idea that the island has the power to change humanity depending on how people respond to it. Still, with mystery also being an essential part of Lost, it is not surprising that the show has left one mysterious detail unanswered.
