Game Of Thrones Massive New RPG Is Already Blowing Up

[

Game of Thrones fans have been waiting forever to get their hands on a high-quality open-world RPG set in Westeros that does justice to George R. R. Martin’s iconic dark fantasy world established in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. While there have been several lackluster video game adaptations over the years, most of these have been RTS-style (real-time strategy) games, mobile slop, or ended up being canceled before ever seeing the light of day.

Fans of the franchise will universally agree that we’re well overdue for a strong open-world RPG that faithfully recreates not only the feeling and atmosphere of the Westerosi setting, but also the political intrigue, character depth, and sense of underlying magic that keep fans captivated in the Game of Thrones HBO universe and GRRM‘s ASOIF novels.

And surprisingly, a brand-new Game of Thrones RPG that is set for its official “Grand Launch” next week is currently blowing up on Steam, with tens of thousands of downloads in the past 24 hours, and it may just be the GoT game fans have been waiting for.

While NetMarble’s Game of Thrones: Kingsroad has been available to check out and download for free in Early Access for over a year now, the game is getting a full-scale launch on May 21, with the official pre-launch on PC going live on Steam yesterday, May 14, 2026 (via SteamDB). As of this writing, the game has over 17k active users in a 24-hour period since its pre-launch release, and despite mixed reviews in the Early Access period, it appears to have some legs.

Kingsroad has faced heavy criticism during its Early Access period, primarily for its mobile-oriented monetization features, with players feeling like it’s essentially a mobile-ported free-to-play game with annoying paywalls. Further, the EA version of the game had its share of technical issues, with players highlighting its clunky systems and janky UI.

Night King and White Walkers going to kill the Three-Eyed Raven in Game of Thrones

That said, as far as Game of Thrones RPGs go, Kingsroad may be the closest attempt at a decent video game adaptation of the HBO show out there, though that’s not really saying much given the quality of other available titles. Kingsroad takes place during the events of HBO’s Game of Thrones, where players assume the role of a lesser Northern noble navigating political turmoil, battling enemies across Westeros, and encountering familiar characters from the show, all while exploring semi-open regions inspired by the series

While it is a free-to-play a live-service game, it features original RPG progression systems and authentic storytelling within the Game of Thrones narrative timeline, and is a valiant attempt at introducing fans to a side of their beloved GoT characters they would have otherwise never seen. It’s well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the Game of Thrones HBO universe, and the full game is available for free on PC now via Steam and Epic, as well as mobile versions for Google (AOS) and the App Store (iOS).
