When it comes to games that are in a desperate need for a remaster, Red Dead Redemption 2 is not considered one of them. First released back in 2018, the Rockstar hit has not even reached its 10th anniversary at the time of writing, and there is no denying that its stunning art direction, environments, and scenery still stand the test of time eight years on. However, there is one problem when it comes to Red Dead Redemption 2, and that is that it is limited to 30fps on console and, as such, fans have been calling out for a remaster, or at least a major patch, that will boost the game to the sweet spot of 60fps.
However, with Rockstar hard at work on putting the final touches to Grand Theft Auto VI ahead of its launch this November, anything relating to Red Dead Redemption 2 and the potential future of the franchise, has well and truly taken a backseat. We may be getting regular updates to Red Dead Online, but that is as far as things are going for Rockstar’s fellow hit franchise.
As such, one fan has taken it upon themselves to push the limits of Red Dead Redemption 2‘s performance and look. Courtesy of Digital Dreams on YouTube, we can now see what the Rockstar classic would look like at a whopping 8K, courtesy of the RTX 5090, an extensive mod list, and ReShade. The result is an incredibly photorealistic Red Dead Redemption 2, with the trailer showcasing some of the game’s most iconic locations, such as Saint Denis, the mountains near Valentine, and beyond. Buildings are crisp and shrouded in shadow with the new lighting improvements, sunlight bursts over the horizon as Arthur rides over mountains, and light reflects harshly on the snow as he takes to the highest peaks. It is a major difference, and gives us just a glimpse at what Red Dead Redemption 2 could potentially look like with the highly-requested next-gen remaster.
As such, fans took to the comments to share their thoughts, and whilst some enjoy the new-and-improved graphics, others are not a fan of the photorealism. “Ages like the finest wine,” the top comment read. Another added, “I play it on a 5070 TI with only one mod, and it is beautiful, more than most other games. Really amazing what Rockstar accomplished with this title.”
However, one user is not as big of a fan, sharing, “That rain looks horrible. The drops just randomly appear and disappear at the weirdest angles, but at least the reflections and lighting are all right.” Another agreed, adding, “It looks stunning, but no way how real life looks.”
Whether you like this photorealistic mod or not is entirely up to you, but there is no denying that Red Dead Redemption 2 is in dire need of that 60fps update. Hopefully it is fan-made projects such as these that will finally inspire Rockstar.
