Miles Morales could be headed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as one of the franchise’s directors teases his take on the Spider-Man character.
Debuting in 2011, Miles was a favorite among comic fans before being introduced to moviegoers in the 2018 animated feature, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Directed by Peter Ramsey, Bob Persichetti, and Rodney Rothman, the film featured Shameik Moore in the title role and became a critical and commercial hit. Thereafter, he became a household name, and speculation over whether he would make the leap from animation to live-action ran rampant.
Among those calling for Miles’ MCU debut is Punisher: One Last Kill director and co-writer Reinaldo Marcus Green. Speaking with The Playlist, the filmmaker discussed his career trajectory and ideal projects. “The long play is to get back into Marvel,” he explained. Getting into specifics, Green suggested that he might be a good fit for the Webslinger due to their similar histories.
He stated: “Obviously, if Spider-Man, Spider-Verse live-action Miles Morales comes along, I know of a half Black, half Puerto Rican Mets fan from New York [who] would be right for that.” Of course, while suggesting himself to play the hero was in jest, Green sharing a background with the character could give him a creative edge needed to pen and/or direct a Miles adaptation in the MCU. As for what he prioritizes in a production, he said: “I just want to work on fun characters; meaningful work with great people.“
As for when Miles will join the MCU, his future is unclear. The franchise has teased his introduction by including his uncle, Aaron Davis/Prowler, and confirming that Aaron had a nephew in Peter Parker’s universe. However, despite this Easter egg, Peter remains the MCU’s primary Spider-Man, and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has indicated that’s unlikely to change anytime soon.
“That is nowhere… Sony has their brilliant, genius, incredible Spider-Verse animated franchise going and until that finishes, we’ve been told to stay away,” the executive said. Notably, the film rights to Spider-Man and most of his supporting characters belong to Sony, so his appearances in MCU projects are subject to a co-financing deal with the studio. Consequently, this means that Sony could deny Marvel Studios from using Miles in their films or live-action television projects.
While his MCU film debut doesn’t seem to be on the horizon, Miles is slated to return to the big screen when Spider-Man: Beyond the Spidr-Verse hits theaters on June 18, 2027.
