Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast is one of the biggest in comic book movie history, meaning several exciting Marvel crossovers can finally take place. The story of Avengers: Doomsday is one of the most ambitious in the entire genre, primarily due to how many heroes have a role. Even more so than some of the best-ranked MCU movies like Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday will push the boundaries of scale, size, and scope in superhero cinema.
The announcement of Avengers: Doomsday‘s massive cast typified this, featuring characters from the MCU’s many universes, superheroes from other franchises like the X-Men, and, of course, the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom himself. This cast, being as huge as it is and spanning multiple decades-old franchises, means Avengers: Doomsday can feature crossovers that many have only dreamed about. With that in mind, here are the eight biggest we could see come December 18, 2026.
8
The X-Men & The Avengers
Perhaps the biggest, most obvious crossover that will feature in Avengers: Doomsday is the team-up between the Avengers and the X-Men. The X-Men movie franchise started in 2000 and continued into the 2010s, when the MCU was at its peak. Given the popularity of both Marvel franchises and the knowledge that the two teams are some of the most influential in Marvel Comics, audiences long desired a crossover.
Finally, that will happen in Avengers: Doomsday. The premise of the movie surrounds the two teams joining forces to defeat Doctor Doom, who is a threat to all universes. Mutants like Professor X, Magneto, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Mystique, Beast, and, above all, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will meet the likes of Thor, Captain America, Hulk, and the many other long-standing heroes of the MCU.
7
Thor & Bucky
A more lowkey crossover that will happen in the MCU is enticing simply because of the disbelief that it hasn’t happened already: Thor and Bucky. The two are integral characters to the franchise and have been since Marvel’s Phase 1. However, the big stories involving Bucky, like Captain America: Civil War, did not feature Thor. Moreover, Avengers: Infinity War kept Thor in space while Bucky was on Earth, with the latter being dusted in Avengers: Endgame.
Despite being two pillars of the franchise, they have never directly interacted on screen. As has been rumored from clips shown at recent conventions, Avengers: Doomsday will change this. After all, Bucky is now a leader of the New Avengers, who will work alongside the regular Avengers and the X-Men to fend off Doctor Doom. After almost two decades, two of the MCU’s oldest characters will finally meet.
6
Loki & Thor
Loki, the variant introduced in the eponymous Disney+ show, has been confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday. Despite Loki and Thor having a long, tumultuous arc in the MCU, this version of Loki has yet to meet the version of Thor featured prominently in the franchise. Since Loki season 1, audiences have wanted this to happen, with Avengers: Doomsday likely providing their reunion.
5
Namor, Sue Storm, & Reed Richards
It is not only the Avengers and the X-Men who will seek to stop Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, but also the villain’s primary rival team: the Fantastic Four. As hinted at in one of Avengers: Doomsday‘s many trailers, the Fantastic Four touch down with the Wakandans, who have links to Namor.
In Marvel Comics, there is somewhat of a love triangle between Namor, Sue Storm, and Reed Richards. The submariner loves Sue, yet she always remains faithful to Reed, causing a deal of drama. Whether this dynamic plays out in Avengers: Doomsday remains to be seen, but either way, it will be exciting to see Namor crossover with these iconic members of the Fantastic Four.
4
Human Torch & Spider-Man
Another big member of the Fantastic Four in Avengers: Doomsday is Johnny Storm/Human Torch. In the comics, Human Torch is very close to Peter Parker/Spider-Man, leading many to desire a team-up between the two characters in the MCU. In fact, Marvel Studios’ president, Kevin Feige himself, has stated that this crossover is one of his dreams for the MCU’s future.
Kevin Feige’s Dream MCU Crossover Is Already Set To Be Reality Within 2 Years
Kevin Feige has recently revealed what his dream MCU crossover would be, with the franchise making this a likely reality in the next two years.
While it is currently unclear whether Tom Holland will return as Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday, it has been heavily rumored and, thus, is highly expected. If so, the crossover between Human Torch and Spider-Man can finally happen in the MCU, bringing an iconic Marvel Comics friendship to life.
3
Gambit & The X-Men
For years, rumors circulated about Channing Tatum playing Gambit in the X-Men movie timeline. However, this never came to fruition, leading the MCU to beat Fox to the punch with Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum’s Gambit will return in Avengers: Doomsday, likely as a member of the X-Men team introduced in the film. Therefore, after decades of teases and near misses, Gambit will crossover with the X-Men in live-action for the first time.
2
Yelena & The Avengers
A big MCU character is Yelena, another of the New Avengers’ leaders. As the sister of Black Widow, Yelena meeting the Avengers, the former’s old team, is a big deal. Thus far in the MCU, Yelena has only met Hawkeye. That said, Avengers: Doomsday will almost certainly introduce her to the rest of the team thanks to the team-up between the New Avengers and the Avengers.
1
A Complete Marvel Universe
The final “crossover” to possibly happen in Avengers: Doomsday is much more vague, as it pertains to the entire Marvel universe. For one of the first times in cinematic history, the MCU encompasses almost all aspects of the Marvel brand. Marvel Studios now has the rights to characters like Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, and even smaller parts of the franchise like the Defenders timeline.
This means that Avengers: Doomsday, despite featuring a whole host of big Marvel characters that will crossover, can go one step further and feature a massive, multiverse-spanning crossover between the entire Marvel universe for the first time in live-action history. If that wasn’t enough, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars promises to do exactly the same.
