Brazil’s Globoplay Joins AI Enabled Sci-Fi Series ‘Space Nation’

EXCLUSIVE: Globo‘s streamer Globoplay has acquired Brazilian rights to AI-enabled sci-fi series Space Nation, which the Brazilian SVOD service will also co-produce as a Globoplay Original.

Ex Machina Studios is behind the eight-part project, which will also be co-produced by Utopai Studios. Ex Machina CEO and veteran producer Marco Weber (Igby Goes Down) is the co-creator of Space Nation and will serve as executive producer, with Martin Weisz also co-creator and director of all eight episodes.

The series is described as “set in the near future, where humanity’s survival rests with a new generation of elite pilots. As Earth confronts an overwhelming alien threat, these young aviators are thrust into relentless combat that tests their loyalty, courage, and faith in one another.” Cast and start date has yet to be set.

Space Nation is written by Weisz and Vanessa Coifman, with Coifman also executive producing. As co-producer, Utopai Studios plans to assist the production through its upcoming production engine AI system, PAI Pro.

The rights deal was brokered by Daniel Baur, CEO of K5 International and Weber for Ex Machina Studios. Ex Machina Studios and K5 International are representing worldwide distribution rights at the Cannes market.

The companies say that principal work is due to take place in LA and that it will be produced “in active alignment with Hollywood guilds”.

Manuel Belmar, Director of Digital Products at Globo, said: “The partnership with Ex Machina Studios for the production of Space Nation reinforces Globoplay’s strategy of investing in stories with strong creative potential and global relevance, always guided by a careful curation of content capable of engaging different audiences. International co-productions play an increasingly important role in this approach, expanding our access to talent, formats, and innovative narratives, while also strengthening Globoplay’s positioning as a platform connected to the key movements shaping the global audiovisual industry.”
