This is a huge year for the PlayStation 5. We have a State of Play presentation coming up soon, and a number of first-party games are releasing on the platform this year, including Marvel’s Wolverine.
That said, Sony has some backend issues to work out still when it comes to the PSN. It was particularly troublesome around the PS5 launch and got much smoother over time, but it’s not always perfect. This is especially true when certain games are added to the PSN, which might cause backend problems for fans and developers alike.
However, this particular rollout didn’t go as swimmingly. Over on Reddit, the community has been cataloging the details, and in the end, they got a free game as an apology. You might be impacted, so make sure you catch up.
This past weekend, The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition (which is essentially an all-inclusive GOTY version of the first Outer Worlds) just hit PlayStation 5. However, there’s been a huge snag with the rollout. Due to some confusion about a “free” PS5 upgrade, many fans picked up the original edition of the game, and waited for the free upgrade to go live. Sadly, it never did, leading fans to reach out to Obsidian.
Even more confusion ensued when a support message claimed that fans needed to own the base game and the expansions, though official material stated only the “base editions.” There’s clearly a marketing mixup there, but Obsidian did make it right in the end. Following the initial debacle, Obsidian asked fans to reach out to their support team, and the team would make it right by delivering a PS5 code directly to them.
Here’s the original poster’s message for Obsidian: “Not all companies hold accountability for messing up, but this is pretty commendable from Obsidian. I also faced the exact same issue as many of you did by purchasing the base game and getting nothing for it. I ended up contacting Obsidian’s support team and explained my situation to them. They ended up sending me a code for the Spacer’s Choice edition. If any of you are still facing the same issue, then their support page will do the necessary.”
Other fans are speculating as to what happened: “I’m pretty sure, by the wording they used, that the ‘licensing issues’ with the PS5 means Sony or some other third party didn’t allow them to give away the Spacer’s Choice edition for free as they had planned, but I’m glad this is a way to circumvent that.”
If this is impacting you, reach out to Obsidian’s support team and get situated. It’s unfortunate, since this is a major first-party XBOX release being put on another platform (those are the last releases you want any backend issues with), but it seems to have been settled.
PlayStation 5 fans have more to look forward to than games from XBOX studios, though. If you aren’t interested in The Outer Worlds, there’s a lot more coming.
