In an era where conservatism ruled 1950s optics, including pop culture, Presley pushed the envelope by being himself, which led the press to label him the music industry’s deep-eyed “bad boy”. But if being “bad” meant experimenting with genres — from the jive of rhythm and blues to the long stretches of gospel — then he was certainly that.
When he wasn’t energizing the masses with “Jailhouse Rock” or “Hound Dog,” he knew when to pull back the momentum with a softer tune. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” Isn’t an Original Elvis Presley Song — But He Put His Own Twist on It
“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” might have been one of Presley’s most defining tracks, but it wasn’t his in the first place. The gentle tune traces its origins to the original 1927 version by Lou Handman and Roy Turk. Both were vaudeville performers, and their version of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” has a classic upbeat, Charlie Chaplin-like waltz tempo. The waltz inclinations themselves come as no surprise, since the music is possibly rooted in the waltz song “Fascination” by Fermo Dante Marchetti. The original version also follows a simple intro–verse–chorus–verse–chorus structure, with an instrumental break in between.

Presley’s version, released in 1960, took several creative liberties. Compared to the more grand and dramatic 1927 version, he removed the upbeat tempo and replaced it with something much softer — with orchestration that is slightly sweeping and lush, and the snare drum just a touch enough to give it a faint beat. Lyrically, apart from removing the intro completely, Presley added an extended spoken-word section, which became the highlight of the song. The track becomes more than just a song; it turns into a spoken confession that sounds like Presley directly addressing the listener, making it feel all the more intimate.
Elvis Presley Had Doubts About Recording “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”
“Are You Lonesome Tonight?” was one of the songs Presley worked on after his military service. In 1957, the then 23-year-old was at the peak of his fame, but by the time he received his draft notice in December 1957, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at the Memphis Draft Board in March 1958. Despite his pop star status, Presley chose to work in the field in the barracks. Because of his choice to serve as a regular soldier, the rock ’n’ roller — who had initially ruffled some public feathers because of his 1956 performance on The Milton Berle Show with his provocative movements — was put in a slightly more favorable light.
This Bowie song slipped through the cracks in the 70s, but it’s now considered legendary.
Nothing softened his new “mature” image more than the tender “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”—a major contrast to the rowdier “Hound Dog.” The song was also manager Colonel Tom Parker’s idea, reportedly requested because it was his wife’s favorite. However, Presley struggled to do the ballad justice. He even asked his fellow musicians and singers to leave the studio during recording sessions. When he attempted a second take alone, with the lights off and the song’s famous spoken bridge, Presley still couldn’t bring himself to believe in the performance. Luckily, producer Steve Sholes ignored Presley’s request to scrap the song and encouraged him to do a third take — this time uninterrupted. Presley may have seen its flaws, but at his level, those imperfections arguably become part of its charm.
Elvis Presley Also Has a “Laughing Version” of “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”
Presley’s musical gamble became a massive success. “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks and generated more than 2 million sales. While the numbers are impressive, the song’s legacy is what truly made it a fan staple. Presley’s performance of the song on the Elvis (‘68 Comeback Special) — an important televised concert marking an attempt to revive his dwindling career — proved to be a successful comeback.
Although “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” is a rather somber tune, Presley knew how to have fun. At the ’68 Comeback Special, Presley performed the song in a more laid-back set, as if it were a jam session, and humorously fumbled and skipped over the extended spoken-word section, making everyone laugh. Later, in 1969, Presley changed the lyrics after noticing a man in the audience slip and lose his toupee— “Do you gaze at your bald head and wish you had hair?” For the rest of the performance, Presley can be heard failing to contain his laughter throughout the track. Funnily enough, that “laughing version” ended up on the British Singles Chart at a modest No. 25.
