All Magic: The Gathering Cards Revealed For The Marvel Super Heroes Set

[

Magic: The Gathering promised to take fans to different worlds with Universes Beyond, and regardless of the reception, they definitely have. What started out as a few sets here and there in the early 2020s became a massive machine, expanding to standard and Commander play.

We’ve visited the universes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Final Fantasy, and we’re set to explore galaxies beyond with an upcoming Star Trek set. No IP is seemingly off limits. As far as the Marvel universe is concerned, there’s a lot of unfinished business. We’ve gotten some Secret Lair drops, a few mechanically unique cards, and of course, the Spider-Man set.

Now, Wizards of the Coast is set to explore most of the greater Marvel universe with the Marvel Super Heroes set, debuting soon. Today, we got a look at some of the cards in the pipeline, and fans are going to have a pretty big reaction.

First up, we have the borderless panel cards showcasing multiple heavy hitters in the Marvel universe, like Thor and Galactus.

Interestingly, Mark Rosewater (Head Designer for Magic: The Gathering) notes that sagas were brought back because they meshed well with the comic-book panel-style storytelling, allowing players to follow each subsequent saga effect in a new illustrated panel.

The borderless cards are also a fantastic window into the greater Marvel universe, as Daredevil, Iron Fist, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, and Magneto are all here.

It’s incredible to see the wide variety of Marvel characters on display here in one set, following the scattered release of sequestered IP in the past, such as the Spider-Man-specific set.

The Commander sets are also fully confirmed for the Marvel Super Heroes line, including:

  • Captain America
  • Captain Marvel
  • Nick Fury
  • Doctor Doom
  • Human Torch
  • Invisible Woman
  • Mister Fantastic
  • The Thing
  • Iron Man
  • Kang Prime
  • Loki
  • Lady Loki
  • Okoye
  • Shuri
  • T’Challa

All of these cards are available in the gallery above; as you can see, they span multiple regions of the Marvel universe. You have the Avengers, the entire Fantastic Four, and Wakanda represented.

The four commander SKUs are as follows:

  • Avengers Assemble
  • Wakanda Forever
  • Fantastic Four
  • Doom Prevails

Wizards is also producing “iconic covers” cards, which are fully done up like a comic book cover. Everything from the effects to the mana cost on the card is stylized.

Naturally, lands will be returning in this set, and they cover some memorable locations from the Marvel universe with a wide variety of art styles.

That land drop also includes dual lands, which add one of two mana types if it entered that turn, or if you control a basic land.

The dual land types shown off in the Marvel Super Heroes set are:

  • Dark Fortress (swamp, mountain)
  • Gathering Place (forest, plains)
  • Gleaming Bastion (plains, island)
  • Hidden Lair (island, swamp)
  • Training Compound (mountain, forest)

Several major characters are also getting “logo” cards, including Doctor Doom, Thanos, and Wolverine. All of them are donning classic costumes.

As far as the main set goes, there’s a lot to go over, including more sagas and characters that aren’t quite as big as Iron Man, like Agent Phil Coulson or The Masters of Evil. You’ll also be able to play Hulk Smash (as an instant) and wield the Arc Reactor for yourself as an artifact.

“Scene cards’ are also an important aspect of the set, focusing on quite a few iconic team-ups, and art like Storm fighting off Loki. Marvel fans will likely appreciate these cards the most.

Of course, the Infinity Stones are a returning focal point, as Wizards points out: “Open the second of six Infinity Stone headliner cards available in multiple rarity tiers, including the ultra-limited cosmic treatment exclusively in Collector Boosters.”

The Magic: The Gathering Marvel Super Heroes set will be released later this month on June 26. Wizards is pulling out all the stops for this one, with a ton of different SKUs available, including collector sets.
