Many have been speculating about when the next God of War game will be revealed, as Santa Monica Studio’s last entry was released all the way back in 2022. Fortunately, during June’s State of Play, Sony announced the next God of War game, Laufey, with a staggering 20-minute unedited gameplay reveal. It looks just as impressive as one would imagine for an entry in this beloved reboot series, but it isn’t quite the next mainline title; instead, it is a spin-off.
God of War Laufey focuses on an entirely new cast of characters, one of whom will be familiar to fans of the reboot games. While Kratos is sure to make an appearance (at the very least as a vision), he isn’t the main character. Rather, our new band of heroes, gods, and villains, voiced by a rather star-studded cast, is set to take us on a brand-new journey through the Everywhen, a god-filled afterlife teeming with danger.
Faye – God of War Laufey’s Protagonist
Faye, played by Daredevil’s own Deborah Ann Woll, is the wife of Kratos, whose body is burnt at the start of 2018’s epic adventure. Indeed, it is her ashes that you fight tooth and nail to spread at the end of that game. So far, she’s only made brief appearances in God of War Ragnarök, but this time, she is the protagonist, proving to be a nimble and powerful fighter with just as much determination as her gruff husband.
Faye is the mother of Atreus, and, as such, it appears she shares his trait of talking out loud, something players will likely either love or hate across the game’s lengthy duration. It is exciting that we’ll finally be able to play as the extremely compassionate, highly fierce, and immensely powerful Faye, although fans of Kratos won’t have to wait long, as the next mainline God of War game was announced alongside Laufey.
Phranque – Faye’s Cube Companion
Phranque (pronounced Frank) is a sentient gelatinous cosmic cube that joins Faye as her companion in God of War Laufey. It is a fast-talking, earnest, and loyal cube that is determined to protect both Faye and the captured creatures of the Everywhen. Voiced by Jack Quaid, perhaps best known for being Hughie in The Boys, Phranque will certainly play a rather significant role throughout God of War Laufey. It even features on the game’s key art, standing (or perhaps wobbling is the right word) next to Faye.
Phranque will help fight alongside you in combat, much like Atreus, and will almost certainly assist with puzzles too. While we haven’t seen much from it or if it can be upgraded, it is fair to say that players will likely rely on their trusty gelatinous friend on more than one occasion. Phranque also seems to know a lot about the Everywhen and its many denizens, so it will likely be spouting a lot of exposition to help guide the player through this mysterious new realm.
Rue – The Sentient Ribbion Guardian
Rue is the sentient talking ribbon attached to Faye’s newfound sword and another key companion in the protagonist’s journey through the Everywhen. Voiced by Perlina Lau, who is best known for creating and starring in Friday Night Bites and Creamerie, Rue, like Phranque, knows a lot more than it is letting on. Specifically, Rue seems to be tied (initially literally) to Faye’s sword, a mysterious weapon that appears to be far more dangerous than it seems.
Rue is also a formidable combat tool in God of War Laufey, proving to be an effective weapon that can pull enemies in toward Faye before she delivers the killing blow. One can easily imagine how Rue will be utilized in traversing the stunning landscapes of God of War Laufey, with Faye likely able to use her to swing across gaps, much like Kratos could with his Blades of Chaos in the previous God of War games.
It is certainly interesting that both of Faye’s main companions are sentient cosmic beings rather than people like in previous God of War titles. While Faye is likely to meet friendly gods that help her in her quest, the fact that the two main companions lack a human-like face could prove an interesting challenge to Santa Monica Studio. Fortunately, both Quaid and Lau are seemingly delivering phenomenal performances that are sure to make up for their lack of a traditional face.
Sekhmet – The Egyptian God of War
Sekhmet is seemingly one of the primary antagonists of God of War Laufey, appearing at the very start of the game after she captures Faye and has her locked up in a cage. In real Egyptian mythology, Sekhmet is the god of war and the daughter of the sun god, Ra. She has an intense bloodlust, can cause plagues, and is generally quite destructive, so a perfect villain for the legendary Faye to go up against. Sekhmet also appears to have a giant dog-like creature as a companion that she uses to investigate a distant bright light.
Interestingly, the Everywhen caters to all mythologies, as it is a realm in which all gods, irrespective of their culture, go when they die. That’s how we get the Egyptian god Sekhmet and the Tibetan Begtse. It opens the floodgates for all kinds of mythology to appear, something that will likely prove extremely interesting over the course of God of War Laufey, and will allow Santa Monica Studio to experiment with a range of environments and enemy design.
Begtse – The Tibetan Lord of War
Begtse is the other primary antagonist that players will meet at the beginning of God of War Laufey. He is a dharmapala, a wrathful god in Tibetan mythology and the lord of war, not unlike his Egyptian counterpart, Sekhmet. While Sekhmet appears to be a little calmer and considered in her actions, Begtse is far more aggressive. Faye fights him at the start of the game after he throws her into a cage, and he uses a slew of flame-based attacks as well as a giant sword.
It remains to be seen if there’s more to Begtse than meets the eye, as so far, he appears to be a hulking and furious boss that Faye will likely encounter on occasion whenever she attempts to foil Sekhmet’s plans. At the very least, he makes for an engaging boss fight, although considering millions of players won’t be able to play God of War Laufey, many may not be able to actually experience that.
More characters are sure to be announced in future trailers, and several will likely be kept secret until the game actually releases. The previous two God of War titles were absolutely packed with memorable characters, and considering there is so much potential for gods of all mythologies to make an appearance in God of War Laufey, Santa Monica is likely playing its cards close to its chest.
