The 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix will mark the first time the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya hosts an F1 race that’s not called the Spanish Grand Prix, with that title now belonging to Madrid’s brand-new street circuit, which will make its debut later this year.
Following an unexpectedly chaotic weekend in Monaco, which was dominated by five-second pit-lane speeding penalties, Barcelona is expected to see a wave of upgrades across the grid. And no big team will be hoping for a bigger step forward than McLaren, who, despite their strong Mercedes power unit, have struggled to consistently challenge at the front this season.
Speaking of power units, the recent ADOU verdict has caused quite a stir. Red Bull reportedly possesses the strongest internal combustion engine, with Mercedes around 2% behind, earning the German manufacturer one additional development upgrade for both this season and next. Audi, Ferrari, and Honda are said to be roughly 4% adrift, granting each of them two extra upgrades across the same period.
Kimi Antonelli enters the weekend as the favourite after a remarkable run of form. However, Lewis Hamilton, who has rediscovered his rhythm and won five consecutive races at Barcelona between 2017 and 2021, could very well spring a surprise. He now sits ahead of George Russell in the drivers’ standings. But can Ferrari hold up on the straights?
The bigger question is whether the likes of George Russell, Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Charles Leclerc – who recently found himself at the centre of Ferrari’s brake-related frustrations with supplier Brembo following his crash in Monaco – can close the gap and make the fight at the front even more competitive.
