Bari Weiss has tapped Sky News presenter Trevor Phillips as senior global affairs correspondent for CBS News, Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski announced Friday. Phillips’ reporting will appear on all CBS News programs and platforms.
“Trevor Phillips cuts through the noise. His decades-long career is a masterclass in seeing beyond groupthink and pursuing the truth,” said Weiss. “Trevor’s deep knowledge of geopolitics and history will be an incredible asset at CBS News, where he’ll quickly become an indispensable voice for audiences across all platforms.”
Widely known in the UK, Phillips is a three-time winner at the Royal Television Society Journalism Awards. Most recently, he hosted Sky News’ flagship program Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips.
Phillips will initially be based in London.
Cibrowski announced to employees in April that the network was planning a new leadership structure for its international coverage, with the introduction of a foreign editor role. Shayndi Rice was named to that role following the exit of Claire Day, a 23-year veteran of CBS News, who had served as London bureau chief for nearly a year before her departure was announced in April.
“CBS News is a global leader in making sense of events around the world for Americans,” said Phillips. “I’m honored to be joining such a storied institution with a mandate to bring impartial reporting, analysis, and journalism to audiences that increasingly need to understand how global affairs impact their daily lives.”
Phillips’ career spans television, business, and politics. He was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1999 for his services to broadcast journalism. He received a knighthood in 2022 for his work in equality and human rights. In addition to serving as a broadcaster, Phillips has written regularly for the UK’s biggest newspapers, The Times, The Daily Mail, The Sun and The Sunday Times.
Phillips began his television career as a researcher at London Weekend Television, later becoming head of current affairs. He presented The London Programme, a long-running ITV current affairs series, from 1987 to 1995. His work has also appeared on the BBC and Channel 4.
He is the co-author of Windrush: The Irresistible Rise of Multi-racial Britain, written with his brother, crime writer Mike Phillips.
