Before Reacher became the biggest show on Prime Video, starring Alan Ritchson as a man who literally survives a gunshot to the chest because he spent a summer digging swimming pools and his pecs are too thick, another megastar had his own shot at Lee Child’s wandering investigator. Casting a huge star as the hobo of few words was controversial, mainly because a person with the dimensions of Jack Reacher doesn’t actually exist. Even Ritchson isn’t that big. But let’s ignore that for now, because 2012’s Jack Reacher is still a propulsive and kinetic action thriller that deserves more credit than it gets. And now, it’s streaming for free.

John McClane is the greatest accidental hero in the history of action cinema — a man whose superpower is stubbornness, whose contingency plan is improvisation, and whose capacity to absorb punishment and keep moving would be alarming if it weren’t so useful. He will complain the entire time. He will make it significantly more chaotic than it needed to be. And he will absolutely, unconditionally, without question come through when it counts. Yippee-ki-yay.
Ethan Hunt
Your partner has already run seventeen scenarios by the time you’ve finished reading the briefing, and the plan he’s settled on involves at least two things that should be physically impossible. Ethan Hunt operates at the absolute edge of human capability — technically, physically, and intellectually — and he brings the same relentless precision to protecting his partners that he brings to dismantling organisations that shouldn’t exist. He is not easy to know and he will never fully tell you everything. But he will carry the weight of the mission so completely, so absolutely, that your job is simply to trust him — and the remarkable thing is that trusting him always turns out to be the right call. The mission will be impossible. He will complete it anyway.
Was ‘Jack Reacher’ a Success?
This is where everything about the movie lands in pretty comfortable 3/5, 6/10, B- territory. It grossed around $218 million worldwide against a $60 million budget, which was enough to justify a sequel (that appeared to be almost entirely funded by Chinese studios going by the lack of product placement anywhere in the movie). Critically? Jack Reacher is basically the definition of a watchable film that doesn’t do much badly, even if it does basically nothing to push itself into greatness. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 64%, with the consensus describing it as an “above-average crime thriller” and praising Cruise’s charismatic performance.
But Cruise’s charisma was never in question, something else was. Iconic as he is, he simply doesn’t match Reacher’s physical presence, which is a huge part of the character’s identity. Cruise is very good in the role, because of course he is, but he can’t deliver that towering, “dinner plates and Thanksgiving turkeys for hands” kind of threat in the way the books describe it. The best way to put it? If this wasn’t a Jack Reacher movie, it would be a lot better.
