Anime is replete with planet-shattering and mind-blowing superpowers. There are anime characters who can shoot planet-shattering energy blasts, bend time and space, or possess the raw physical strength to level mountains. For decades, the shonen landscape has been filled with such abilities, enabling high-octane battles that have now become the norm in anime.
However, not all of anime’s most brilliant abilities rely solely on brute force; some operate on bizarre conceptual logic, cunning wit, or devious application. At first glance, these abilities may not appear as dangerous or intimidating, but they become truly terrifying in the hands of a competent user willing to maximise their potential.
Hence, against this backdrop, this article counts down the 10 most creative powers in anime history, celebrating the abilities that broke the mould and revolutionised battles. These are powers that abandon stereotypes to delve into creativity that highlight ingenious magic systems, leaving viewers in awe, from mind-bending reality-warping to deceptively simple powers with devastating applications.

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Fitzgerald’ – Bungo Stray Dogs
In Kafka Asagiri’s Bungo Stray Dogs, characters are named after legendary literary figures and wield abilities that correspond to their masterworks. However, few powers are as unforgettably tongue-in-cheek as that of Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, “The Great Fitzgerald”, an extremely wealthy man and the leader of the guild who has the power to literalise hypercapitalism.
By taking inspiration from the literary work The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald can gain an increase in physical prowess proportional to the money he spends. By trading in his material wealth, Fitzgerald gains an equivalent boost in physical strength, speed and durability. This is the embodiment of a “pay-to-win” mechanic brought to life within an anime battle system.
When Fitzgerald throws a cheque, a fistful of dollar bills or makes a massive bank transfer, the money fades out of existence; in exchange, green, circuit-like glowing patterns appear across his body and clothing. This power is limited only by how much money he can spend, a truly devastating ability in the hands of an obscenely wealthy man.

Bobby Ball’s Marble Rumble – High Card
In the world of High Card, superpowers are granted by a deck of 52 magical X-Playing Cards, each offering unique powers with reality-bending traits. In this world, Bobby Ball, a depraved soldier for the Klondike Family, wields the 3 of Diamonds, which gives him the ability called “Marble Rumble”.
Marble Rumble gives Bobby the simple yet effective ability to turn anything he grabs or touches with his hands into a standard, smooth marble. This ability completely ignores the target’s natural durability, density, or mass. This gives Bobby a multitude of applications for this ability, being able to turn the battlefield into a flurry of marbles.
Bobby can flood an entire room with loose marbles in an instant by touching the floor. He also uses this ability to keep a handful of marbles on him at all times, launching them with incredible force, acting as a substitute for shotgun shrapnel. The ability becomes even more frightening when the possibility of him touching human flesh is considered.

Larcade Dragneel’s Pleasure-based magic – Fairy Tail
In Fairy Tail, battle magic is typically loud, explosive and elemental in nature. The dragon slayers, such as Natsu, the main character, wield elemental magic, such as fire and lightning. However, Larcade Dragneel, a member of Zeref’s elite Spriggan 12, goes against the grain by wielding Pleasure Magic, a bizarre, psychologically devastating power that overwhelms the senses.
Larcade’s ability functions by manipulating the fundamental desires and biological needs of human beings. Instead of attacking his opponent’s bodies directly, he overloads their nervous systems with pure, overwhelming sensation. The pleasure he can inflict is so intense it can bring seasoned warriors to their knees, paralysing them and leaving them gasping for air.
Pleasure magic is multifaceted, and Larcade can wield it in various ways. His ability to manipulate pleasure applies only to those who have experienced carnal desire in their lifetime; innocent characters are unaffected. However, Larcade can intensify the primal need for sustenance by inflicting mind-altering starvation and can put enemies into an eternal sleep from which they may never wake.
7
Juiz d’Arc’s Unjustice – Undead Unluck
The world of Undead Unluck is rife with amazingly creative and powerful abilities, with no shortage of creative applications, but few are as creative as Juiz d’Arc’s Unjustice. The world of Undead Unluck contains powers known as ‘Negation abilities’, cosmic curses that completely reject and nullify specific rules of reality.
Juiz’s Unjustice bypasses traditional magic and physical armour altogether, turning a target’s morality against them. It undermines their personal sense of “justice”, compelling them to act in direct opposition to their moral beliefs. To activate this, Juiz must lift her helmet and establish direct eye contact with her opponent while they are actively pursuing a goal they truly believe in.
Once the ability activates, their physical actions are violently reversed. Unjustice can target multiple opponents, as seen when an advanced alien fleet invaded Earth, believing it was the only way to save its dying species. During this crisis, Juiz quickly ends the battle by lifting her visor and activating Unjustice, causing the aliens to turn their weapons on each other.

Accelerator’s Vector Manipulation – A Certain Magical Index
In the world of Kazuma Kamachi’s A Certain Magical Index series, superpowers (known as esper abilities) are grounded in hard science and quantum physics. At the pinnacle of this system is Academy City’s top-ranked psychic, Accelerator. As his name suggests, Accelerator wields the ability of vector manipulation, a power that makes him nigh untouchable.
A vector is any quantity that has both a magnitude (size) and a direction, such as velocity, force, momentum, and electric current. Accelerator’s power gives him full mastery over these forces, allowing him to control, track, and rewrite the vectors of anything he touches. He uses this ability to send anything that attacks him flying in the opposite direction.
Accelerator’s power is genuinely formidable, as his redirection field cancels all attacks by changing the course of any object or magic that contacts his skin, causing them to reverse direction by 180 degrees. What makes this ability particularly inventive is that Accelerator must actively calculate the physics of his surroundings; his power is directly proportional to his exceptional intellect.

Reggie Star’s Contractual Re-Creation – Jujutsu Kaisen
The power system in Jujutsu Kaisen is based on cursed techniques that are deeply tied to the characters’ ancestry, psychological traits, historical eras, or strict binding vows. Reggie Star is a character who was introduced in the high-stakes Culling Games arc as an ancient sorcerer with a ridiculous appearance, wearing a cloak made entirely of paper receipts.
Reggie Star’s appearance takes on greater meaning once his cursed technique is revealed. He possesses the innate technique of contractual re-creation, one of the most versatile and creative abilities in the series, which allows him to manifest contracts. With this ability, he can conjure anything as long as he has a binding contract for that thing in his possession.
This ability isn’t limited to physical objects. As Reggie burns the receipt for a luxury hotel stay, he manifests the abstract concept of the purchase, revitalising himself. This ability requires him to think tactically and choose the right receipt for each situation, highlighting his tactical mind, which was on full display in his fight with Megumi Fushiguro.
4
Urahara’s Bankai (Reconstruction ability) – Bleach
Kisuke Urahara is a character in Bleach who has been characterised as crafty, intelligent and resourceful. Since his introduction, he has been widely regarded as the most intelligent person in the universe, a reputation that only fuelled anticipation for the unveiling of his Bankai. His Bankai is revealed in the 1000 Year Blood War arc as one befitting his character.
For Kisuke Urahara, the former captain of the 12th Division and Soul Society’s resident mad scientist, a Bankai that merely boosted his physical stats was never the goal. His Bankai is revealed to be Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, an ability that serves as an extension of his scientific intellect: the power of complete architectural reconstruction.
When activated, a ghostly woman with jointed arms and braided hair appears behind him. She can cut open, disassemble, and restitch anything within her range. The bankai treats everything as fabric, allowing Urahara to open, take apart, or stitch elements together to create new structures. It’s the ultimate surgical tool that can warp reality, affecting both living and non-living beings.
3
Hisoka Morrow’s Bungee Gum – Hunter X Hunter
The power system in Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter, centred on the use and manipulation of Nen, is among the most creative and complex in anime, lauded for its ability to turn seemingly simple abilities into godlike powers, depending on how they are applied. No character embodies this philosophy more than Hisoka Morrow, whose ability, Bungee Gum, exemplifies it.
Bungee Gum is a deceptively dangerous ability that makes Hisoka one of the most dangerous and unpredictable antagonists in Hunter X Hunter. Hisoka stated that Bungee Gum possesses the properties of both rubber and gum. With this ability, Hisoka alters the aura radiating from his body, making it sticky like chewing gum yet wildly elastic like a rubber bungee cord.
He can attach his pink-hued aura to enemies by touch or by using playing cards, giving it utility in battle: it can stop projectiles, fling them back at enemies, and trap opponents. The ability also has medical applications, allowing him to reconnect limbs, patch mortal wounds, and even restart the heart when it flatlines.
2
Witch Hat Atelier’s glyph-based magic system – Witch Hat Atelier
The beauty of the magic system in Witch Hat Atelier is that magic is something everyone can practise. It is one of this world’s best-kept secrets, yet everyone, regardless of origin or bloodline, has access to it. The anime introduces a glyph-based drawing system in which anyone with the right skills, knowledge, and special ink can cast spells.
The fact that magic is accessible to everyone with the right tools does not mean it is easy or that all witches are on the same skill level. What separates veterans such as Quifrey from novices like Coco is the ability to perform magic in intense situations with inhuman accuracy and a deep understanding of various spells and geometry.
Because magic is so accessible in this world, magic battles are dictated by preparedness and skill. Witches prepare by stitching elaborate magic circles onto their clothes, painting them onto the soles of their shoes to gain sudden bursts of speed, or drawing half-completed circles on pebbles to hurl like magical landmines, detonating with a final stroke of ink.

Hero X’s Reality Warping – To Be Hero X
The world of To Be Hero X is governed by the “Trust Value” system, in which a hero’s strength is dictated entirely by public faith and popularity. In this system, the mysterious Hero X stands at the absolute peak as the strongest hero, occupying the number 1 spot despite being only a humble salaryman from the FOMO app company.
The origins of Hero X’s power are shrouded in mystery, much like his identity at the beginning of the anime. How an unknown person appeared and dominated all others in a system where popularity is the key to power is a question still unanswered; however, what is certain is that Hero X’s reality-warping ability makes him indisputably the strongest hero.
Hero X’s power is rooted in the concept of ideogenesis. He can manifest things and warp reality to match his imagination. He treats the laws of physics as optional, warping matter, terrain, and dimensions with complete control. One of the masterful displays of his power is his ability to transform the world from 2D to 3D in an instant.
