This article contains discussion of violence, mental health, and suicide.

Every now and then, viewers come across an anime that completely subverts any and all expectations. Many longtime fans are well aware that looks can be deceiving, with some of the most unsettling stories told in a seemingly whimsical or lighthearted introduction, style, or premise. Newcomers to anime might find that there are quite a few series that look nothing like they appear to be, with a hidden darkness hiding beneath the surface.

These stories can be hidden behind colorful or cozy visuals or even behind a young, spirited protagonist who seems destined for an uplifting adventure. However, once the story begins to unravel, it becomes clear that the anime is hiding layers of trauma, violence, obsession, heartbreak, and psychological horror. These deceptive anime can range from devastating to unsettling to outright horrific, making them some of the medium’s darkest stories.

Wonder Egg Priority initially seems like a coming-of-age fantasy story that’s centered on friendship and self-discovery. The story opens with Ai Ohto, a withdrawn teenager who finds herself in a surreal dream world after receiving mysterious eggs that hatch into girls in need of protection. From there, the colorful visuals and imaginative creature designs make the series seem as if it will be an emotional yet hopeful story.

However, beneath the dreamlike appearance, the series makes it clear that it’s a dark exploration of trauma. The narrative confronts heavy issues such as suicide, bullying, self-harm, abuse, and exploitation through the experiences of the girls Ai encounters and the friends she meets along the way. Wonder Egg Priority is heartbreaking and psychologically intense, with a story that starts off strong. However, be forewarned that its ending, or lack thereof, leaves much to be desired.

The character designs for Takopi’s Original Sin appear deceptively cute, especially the titular, cheerful alien. When Takopi arrives on Earth with the mission of spreading happiness, using a collection of whimsical gadgets, it seems as though the short series is gearing up for a lighthearted adventure. Paired with its focus on elementary students, most would assume the series is about friendship and perhaps even problem-solving.

Takopi’s Original Sin can be distressing for some viewers, so viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Instead, it quickly becomes clear that the storyline confronts harsh realities and sensitive topics, from child abuse to suicide. In six episodes, Takopi’s Original Sin explores isolation and neglect in heartbreaking, unforgettable ways. As events in the series spiral out of control, the story doesn’t hesitate to explore the consequences and lasting impact of each choice.

Higurashi: When They Cry takes place in Hinamizawa, an idyllic rural village where life moves slowly and days are peaceful. When Keiichi Maebara arrives, the village seems like a comforting place to live and spend time with close friends. The character designs, along with their early interactions, feel warm and familiar, masking the darkness just beneath the surface.

Soon, the story gives way to escalating paranoia as a recurring pattern of unexplained deaths and disappearances becomes tied to the village’s annual festival. That tension gradually grows into mistrust and a cycle of violence that occurs across different timelines. As the arcs repeat, it becomes increasingly clear that something sinister is at play, and tragedy may be unavoidable.

Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life

Happy Sugar Life quickly captures attention with its pastel colors, soft lighting, and characters who seem innocent and wholesome. Satou Matsuzaka is introduced as an ordinary high school student navigating friendships and a part-time job, with her life outside school revolving around a secluded apartment and her time with a young girl named Shio.

However, that illusion is pulled away by the reality of Satou and Shio’s relationship, which begins with abduction and is filled with manipulation and escalating violence. Satou’s obsessive devotion appears through increasingly extreme actions, including taking out anyone who threatens her twisted version of love. As the story continues, viewers will find that there is an entire network of unstable relationships in the series, along with characters who are not in their right minds.

The Promised Neverland opens at Grace Field House, an idealized orphanage where children grow up under the tender, loving care of Isabella. The series originally seems as though it would become a touching coming-of-age story, but when gifted children, Emma, Norman, and Ray, find out that Grace Field House isn’t what it seems, it opens the door to a far darker reality.

What initially appears to be a comforting story turns into a psychological thriller filled with suspense and high-stakes survival.

The facility’s true purpose is to raise children as livestock for demon consumption, with only the most intelligent girls being singled out to become “Mothers” of other similar facilities. In order to survive, Emma, Norman, and Ray must struggle for survival and outwit their caretaker by orchestrating an escape. What initially appears to be a comforting story turns into a psychological thriller filled with suspense and high-stakes survival.

At first, Puella Magi Madoka Magica appears to be a conventional magical girl story built around friendship, teamwork, and signature colorful transformations. Madoka Kaname and her friends are introduced as ordinary middle school students who are suddenly given the chance to become magical girls who battle witches by a creature known as Kyubey in exchange for any wish they want granted.

However, the series soon dismantles every expectation with dark, unexpected turns. When the true cost of magical girls comes to light, the consequences are irreversible, leaving the girls trapped in a system that ultimately leads to despair. This cruel system leads to horrific events and immense trauma among the girls, with some willing to go to any length to ensure that Madoka doesn’t suffer the same fate.

Made in Abyss takes place in a town built around the edge of a colossal chasm known simply as the Abyss. It’s explored by Cave Raiders who are trained to recover ancient relics from its depths. When Riko meets Reg, an amnesiac robot boy, she becomes determined to venture down, following her mother’s footsteps, with the hope of finding her again at the bottom. Initially, with the cute art style of the series, the story seems as if it would be a lighthearted adventure.

Instead, it’s one of the most disturbing anime ever made. The Abyss carries a curse that punishes any attempt to ascend, with consequences that become more severe the deeper one goes, threatening the loss of humanity and even death. While the story begins as an adventurous expedition, it soon becomes a terrifying descent filled with loss, pain, sacrifice, mutilation, and more, making it a difficult and deceptive series to confront.
