John Wick Meets Terminator In A24’s Upcoming Action Sci-Fi Thriller

[

A24 has typically been in the business of tiny indie dramas like Waves and Lady Bird, and elevated horror movies like The Witch and Hereditary. But over the past few years, A24 has been expanding beyond its low-budget comfort zone and started making more expensive movies in genres like action and sci-fi in a bid to become a proper Hollywood movie studio. With big-budget efforts like Civil War and Marty Supreme, A24 has left behind its roots as an arthouse outfit and taken on the majors.

So far this year, A24 has had two massive, unprecedented box office hits. The Drama, a wonderfully excruciating cringe comedy about American gun violence, sailed past $100 million worldwide, and Backrooms — a creepypasta adaptation directed by a teenaged YouTuber — has become the studio’s biggest hit ever.

Next up is The Invite, Olivia Wilde’s buzzy, star-studded festival acquisition, and Tony, a biopic chronicling Anthony Bourdain’s early career, and then, on September 4, we’ll get one of A24’s only straightforward action movies: Onslaught. From You’re Next director Adam Wingard (already a very positive sign), Onslaught follows a badass mother’s quest to protect her family from rogue super-soldiers that have escaped from a nearby military base.

The best way to describe the movie, at least based on the vibes of the trailer, is John Wick meets Terminator. It’ll have the relentless, non-stop action of John Wick, with a one-man army (or, rather, one-woman army) taking on wave after wave of deadly enemies. But those deadly enemies are cybernetically enhanced killing machines like the titular androids of the Terminator franchise. It basically imagines a scenario where a John Wick-style badass action hero goes up against a bunch of unstoppable Terminators — and, hopefully, when the movie hits theaters later this year, it’ll be exactly as awesome as it sounds.

Onslaught Will Be Further Proof Of Adria Arjona’s Wonder Woman Credentials

Since James Gunn’s DC Universe has yet to cast its Wonder Woman, the internet is ablaze with fan castings and potential candidates. The same goes for Batman and the Joker and all the other as-yet-unfilled roles in the DCU. Alan Ritchson is a popular choice for Bruce Wayne, Bill Skarsgård is a popular choice for the Clown Prince of Crime (probably because he played the Clown Prince of Derry so darn well in the It films), and Adria Arjona — the star of Onslaught — is a popular choice to succeed Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman on the big screen.

Arjona’s career has blown up in the last couple of years, and she’s shown off a ton of range in a very short space of time. She brought a real, relatable humanity to the pulpy Star Wars universe in Andor. She was an irresistible romantic lead in Hit Man, but also demonstrated impressive comedic chops. Arjona can do it all, and Gunn would be lucky to have her on board as the DCU’s Wonder Woman.

But the real test will be her performance in Onslaught. This will be Arjona’s first shot at carrying an action vehicle, and convincingly portraying an action hero who can effortlessly wipe out a room full of bad guys. If she can pull off her role in Onslaught, then there will be no doubt that she can pull off Wonder Woman.

Onslaught will be Arjona’s ultimate audition for the role of Wonder Woman, but it seems she may have already landed the part. Arjona has actually been cast in Gunn’s next DCU project, the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, reportedly as Maxima, but it stands to reason that if she was cast as Wonder Woman, the name Maxima would get floated around to throw people off the scent.
