Almost six months still lie in wait before the release of Avengers: Doomsday, but that doesn’t mean that Marvel is sitting back and having a quiet year until then. Even setting aside the impending release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, there’s a lot for Marvel fans to pay attention to.
With Robert Downey Jr. set to star as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, it stands to reason that the character will be a focus in general this year. Along with the Latverian despot himself, a squad of iconic villains is set to appear in August courtesy of a new video game.
As Avengers: Doomsday Looms, Doctor Doom Assembles His Own Team
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, a fighting game featuring a 20-character roster of familiar Marvel figures, recently offered a look at its take on the Knights of Doom. Fighting Souls divides all of its characters into four-person squads, with four villains uniting under Doctor Doom’s barrier.
Along with Doctor Doom himself, the squad contains Magneto, Green Goblin, and Carnage. It’s not a very typical alliance, as Doctor Doom isn’t one to lean on other villains when he can enact his plans alone, but it certainly makes for a fearsome lineup.
The Knights of Doom also break up the monotony of the overall character roster, as other squads favor heroes over villains. The Fighting Avengers and the Unbreakable X-Men both contain familiar faces from their respective lineups, while the Amazing Guardians opts for the more eclectic team of Ms. Marvel, Peni Parker, Spider-Man, and Star-Lord.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls Looks Better And Better
The Knights of Doom trailer for Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls opens with an animated cinematic, highlighting the Champion of the Universe, who serves as the antagonist of the story. Doctor Doom steps out as a worthy opponent, acknowledging that the Champion has “defeated whole worlds,” but promising to show him “why [he] should kneel.” It’s an appropriately menacing moment, displaying the kind of aura that Robert Downey Jr. will hopefully recapture in Avengers: Doomsday.
Magneto steps in next, with a voice line that offers a clue as to the nature of their alliance in-game. Magneto reveals that Doom “made promises” and intones that “those promises shall be kept.”
Up next is Green Goblin, who taunts Spider-Man in a comparatively comical manner. Carnage shows up to finish the fight against Spider-Man, seeking to claim the glory of killing the hero himself. At the end of the trailer, all four team up for a special Knights of Doom attack, unleashing what looks like a fairly unstoppable series of assaults on poor Peter Parker.
I’m not typically very invested in fighting games, but I have to admire everything that Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is bringing to the table. Another great Marvel fighting game is very overdue, and this one is leaning into all the style and variety that the IP offers. The Knights of Doom stand out in particular, as a finishing attack that unites four legendary Marvel villains is hard to ignore.
While I don’t expect Avengers: Doomsday to pair Doctor Doom with any of the gang here, it’s nice to have a new way to have fun with the character ahead of the movie. He might usually be up to nefarious schemes, but when it comes to defeating the Champion of the Universe, he could be just what the heroes of Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls need.
