Netflix’s The Diplomat Season 4 Plot Details Confirm Major Fallout From Season 1 Storyline

[

The Diplomat season 4 will be going back to the very beginning.

Plot details for the Netflix political thriller have confirmed fallout coming from season 1’s original storyline, with characters forced to reckon with their past actions as new problems arise. The Diplomat season 4, which is currently in development, will follow up on Hal (Rufus Sewell) betraying Kate (Keri Russell) by working alongside Grace Penn (Allison Janney) to steal the Poseidon weapon. However, it’s also expected to continue the storyline of the British carrier ship attack Grace was involved in, but that UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) publicly accused deceased President Bill Rayburn (Michael McKean) of having enacted.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Janney and series creator Debora Cahn explained how this fallout of the carrier ship attack will continue in The Diplomat season 4. The lead actor hinted some of Grace’s upcoming decisions will be informed by her involvement. Cahn also explained how the consequences of the attack will inform the rest of the series, with season 4 diving deeper into the schism US involvement has put between them and the UK. She also revealed just how far into the show’s story season 4 actually is.

Check out what Janney and Cahn had to say below:

Allison Janney: It’s pretty wild. Grace is not afraid to make bold decisions and to suffer the consequences, whatever they are, and she’ll stand behind what decision she makes. Not everyone agrees with her.

Debora Cahn: There was always a very long plan for what the carrier meant to the relationship between these two countries. The consequences reverberate through the third season and will continue through the fourth. It’s satisfying for me to be able to make one geopolitical error resonate over a number of seasons. Look at the relationships between countries. We are still dealing with things that happened decades, sometimes centuries ago. Certainly with the U.K., the origin story [of the U.S.] will always be hanging over the way that we interact now.

I grew up in broadcast television, where one season was 22, sometimes 25, episodes, so it feels like we’re just getting started. It doesn’t feel to me like we’re in season four. It feels like we’re in the juicy middle.

The Diplomat season 3 ended with plenty of chaotic setup for season 4, including Trowbridge’s accusation of Rayburn’s involvement in the British carrier ship attack. However, the whereabouts of Poseidon are also going to be important, especially since Hal betrayed Kate in order to get the weapon in the US’ hands. The protagonist’s trust has been broken one too many times, something that could echo in how the relationship between the show’s core countries evolves, or devolves, going into the upcoming episodes.

Only a few characters in The Diplomat know the truth about the attack, something that seems like can’t be revealed unless Kate can somehow get Grace out of the Oval Office. Even though Rayburn is dead, the accusation of his involvement in what happened has still driven a rift between both countries. It’s one that could get stronger as the show progresses, especially since the notion of his alleged betrayal will still be fresh once season 4 rolls around. But clearing his name may only cause even more chaos once Grace’s true involvement is revealed.

The careful balancing act Kate needs to maintain as she tries to enact justice means there’s going to be lengthy, uncomfortable developments surrounding the attack as season 4 progresses. Whether the truth will be revealed remains to be seen, but for now, it appears the blame going to the deceased President is beneficial for Grace and her current state of power. She’s unlikely to give that up so easily, even if she remains in Kate’s crosshairs.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed when The Diplomat season 4 will be arriving, when the show does come back, it will have plenty to explore for the fallout of the attack thanks to season 3’s developments. Although her task is now more difficult than ever before, Kate still seems determined to get justice, even as Grace makes moves that could end in chaos for the protagonist if she’s not careful.
