14 Years After The Dark Knight Rises, Bane Is Officially Batman’s Next Movie Villain

[

Over a decade after Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was released, Bane is coming back as the next villain in a Batman movie. Batman continues getting different adaptations on TV and film, some of them part of the DC Universe’s main continuity and others part of its Elseworlds branch. The former is preparing its own live-action Batman movie, The Brave and the Bold, while Elseworlds is currently working on Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II.

The Elseworlds branch houses all those projects that don’t fit into the DC Universe’s main continuity, most notably Reeves’ The Batman, Todd Phillips’ Joker movies, the animated series Harley Quinn and My Adventures with Green Lantern, and the live-action series Superman & Lois. Also part of Elseworlds are the DC Universe Animated Original Movies, which include movies like Batman: The Long Halloween and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, and which will release Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 in 2026.

Based on DC Comics’ Knightfall trilogy of storylines, which ran from 1993 to 1994, Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 is directed by Jeff Wamester and written by Jeremy Adams. Knightfall entered production in October 2025, and it’s expected to be released sometime in 2026. DC is slowly releasing more details about this upcoming Batman movie, such as the first poster for it, and among its most exciting elements is that it’s bringing Bane back as the main villain after his role in The Dark Knight Rises.

Batman Will Face Bane One More Time In Batman: Knightfall

The first look at the poster for Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 arrived with a couple of details about the tone and format of the movie. Knightfall will be R-rated and released in four parts, so fans of the comic book storyline can rest assured that the movie will cover all the key characters, scenes, and story points from its source material. Even more exciting is the announcement that the first look at Knightfall will arrive on June 23, 2026.

Now, adding to the excitement of Knightfall is the main villain of the story: Bane, who was last seen in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, where he was played by Tom Hardy. Bane is part of Batman’s rogues gallery, and a feared villain who brings great intelligence and unbelievable physical strength, a result of his use of the Venom drug. Thanks to all this, Bane challenges Batman mentally and physically, and in the latter, he infamously broke the Dark Knight’s back, precisely during the events of Knightfall.

The core of the Knightfall storyline is Bane pushing Batman to his limits, physically and mentally, first by breaking the inmates of Arkham Asylum free, and later by physically confronting him at Wayne Manor, as he had deduced his identity. It’s easy to see why the animated Knightfall movie adaptation will be R-rated and divided into four parts, as it’s quite intense and there’s a lot to cover, and it will be interesting to see the Caped Crusader face Bane one more time.

The Dark Knight Rises Was Partially Inspired By Batman: Knightfall

If this confrontation between Bane and Batman sounds familiar, it’s because Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was partially inspired by Batman: Knightfall. In The Dark Knight Rises, a retired Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) is forced to go back to crime-fighting after Bane threatens to destroy Gotham City with a nuclear weapon. Among Bane’s plans is to expose Harvey Dent’s crimes, after which he releases the prisoners from Blackgate Penitentiary. Before that, however, Bane breaks Batman’s back during a confrontation under Wayne Tower.

Bane’s plan continues while Wayne heals at the underground prison in the Middle East where Bane lived for many years. In addition to Knightfall, The Dark Knight Rises was also based on Batman: No Man’s Land and The Dark Knight Returns. Although key parts of Knightfall have already been seen in a movie, there’s a lot more to cover from the original storyline, making Batman: Knightfall – Part 1 one of the most exciting upcoming Batman projects.
