Prime Video Brings Back Iconic Cyberpunk Franchise For New Series Premiering In July

[

It’s an exciting time for cyberpunk fans. While ambitious cyberpunk streaming series Altered Carbon and The Peripheral were prematurely canceled, a new wave of TV projects like Apple TV’s Neuromancer and season 2 of Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is bringing the genre to the center of conversation. After years of existing on the fringes of pop culture sci-fi, cyberpunk is suddenly everywhere.

It’s easy to understand why. Stories exploring the relationship between humanity and technology feel increasingly relevant in the modern world, and among the growing list of upcoming cyberpunk shows is the return of one of the best franchises to explore these themes. Prime Video’s The Ghost in the Shell, a reboot of the classic movie and TV series, is on the way in July.

Produced by Science SARU, known for titles such as Dandadan and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Prime’s The Ghost in the Shell will be a retelling of the classic manga by Masamune Shirow. However, viewers expecting the dark, muted aesthetic of the 1995 animated film or Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex may be in for a major surprise.

The New Ghost In The Shell TV Show Will Reconnect With The Heart Of The Manga

For decades, most adaptations of Ghost in the Shell have been heavily influenced by the legacy of Mamoru Oshii’s groundbreaking 1995 movie. Its moody atmosphere and strikingly realistic cyberpunk visuals became synonymous with the franchise. Later projects, including the equally influential series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, expanded on that approach.

Prime Video’s The Ghost in the Shell, however, is taking a different path. Rather than drawing primarily from previous anime adaptations, Science SARU has looked back to Masamune Shirow’s original 1989 manga. This means brighter colors, more expressive character designs, and, most importantly, a visual energy that’s much closer to the original 1989 manga. The show’s director, Mokochan, has explained that the team wanted to recreate the warmth of Shirow’s hand-drawn artwork despite telling a story set in a highly technological future (via Variety):

“The manga is obviously hand-drawn on paper; it’s analog. And so even though what is depicted here is this cyber world, the fact that it’s been hand drawn by people is what gives it, it gives it its warmth, and its appeal, and that was something I wanted to replicate in the anime.”

Cyberpunk is rooted in cold technology and sterile futuristic environments, yet, surprisingly, Science SARU’s animation emphasizes humanity. This approach not only helps Prime Video’s Ghost in the Shell series stand out, but also prevents the reboot from retreading familiar ground. Fans already have the 1995 film and Stand Alone Complex if they want a grittier, darker take on GitS. By returning to the manga’s colorful personality, The Ghost in the Shell offers a genuinely new way to experience the story.

The Timing For Prime’s Ghost In The Shell Series Is Perfect

Prime Video’s decision to launch The Ghost in the Shell on July 7 could hardly come at a better moment. Cyberpunk is currently enjoying a significant resurgence thanks to many of the one-futuristic themes of the genre now seeming remarkably relevant. Many streaming platforms are riding that momentum with major TV projects.

Apple TV+ is developing an adaptation of Will Gibson’s hugely influential cyberpunk novel Neuromancer, and Netflix is moving forward with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season 2 following the enormous success of the original anime. Meanwhile, Prime Video is producing Blade Runner 2099, a continuation of another one of sci-fi’s most influential cyberpunk franchises. So many major studios investing in cyberpunk feels unheard of. For years, the genre struggled to maintain a consistent presence on television despite its influence on popular culture. Not anymore.

That makes the arrival of The Ghost in the Shell feel especially timely, since the wider franchise helped define modern cyberpunk. Its influence can be seen everywhere from The Matrix to countless anime, films, games, and TV shows. With cyberpunk becoming more visible and relevant than it has been in years, now feels like the ideal moment for Ghost in the Shell to make a combeack.

For longtime cyberpunk fans, Prime Video’s The Ghost in the Shell represents the return of an icon. For newer audiences discovering cyberpunk through projects like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or the upcoming Neuromancer, it offers the chance to experience one of the genre’s most important and influential stories just as interest in cyberpunk reaches a new peak.
