What Happened To Suki In Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2?

[

Warning! This article contains spoilers for season 3 of the original Avatar: The Last Airbender, and, likely, future seasons of Netflix’s show.

Suki disappears midway through Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, raising the question of what happened to her. After playing a big role in season 1, Maria Zhang returned to the cast of Avatar: The Last Airbender, primarily in season 2, episode 1. Suki journeyed with Team Avatar through the Serpent’s Pass, eventually reaching the city of Ba Sing Se, where she and her warriors departed to continue fighting the Fire Nation.

However, by the time of Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2’s ending, one cannot help but wonder what happened to her. The last time Suki is seen is in the opening moments of season 2, episode 4, where she discovers the Fire Nation army set to invade Ba Sing Se. Before she can warn those in the city, though, the Kyoshi Warriors are attacked by Mai, Ty Lee, and Azula. Suki is last shown facing off against Azula herself, with the two clashing before the episode abruptly cuts back to Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph.

In our exclusive cover story, Avatar: The Last Airbender’s cast and crew dive into recreating animated aspects and the Gaang’s new season 2 dynamic.

The remaining three episodes do not directly address what happens to Suki; Azula and her friends are shown infiltrating Ba Sing Se using the armor of the Kyoshi Warriors, but the fate of Suki and her comrades is left uncertain. As is known from the original animated show, this is by design, with Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 promising to reveal what became of Suki. In the original show, Azula captured Suki and the other Kyoshi Warriors, imprisoning the former in a high-security Fire Nation prison named the Boiling Rock.

Season 3, episodes 14 and 15 of the original show showcase Sokka attempting to break Suki out of the prison. As far as Netflix’s adaptation reveals, it is safe to assume that the same fate befell Suki after her duel with Azula in season 2, episode 4. Nonetheless, this leads to some wider questions about the Netflix version of the story, and how Suki’s story will play out going into season 3.

Will The Boiling Rock Be Part Of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3?

Perhaps the biggest question is whether Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender will adapt “The Boiling Rock” at all. Both seasons 1 and 2 of the Netflix adaptation skipped various episodes from the original show, as was expected when adapting 20+ episodes into seven or eight-episode seasons. The same will undoubtedly be the case for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3, with Netflix having to trim down what is arguably the meatiest season from a narrative perspective.

This could mean that episodes with less narrative importance, no matter how beloved they are, like “The Boiling Rock” are skipped in favor of more consequential installments from the original show. That said, there is still a way Netflix can include Suki’s imprisonment, only in a way that doesn’t take an entire episode. As teased in Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, the live-action show is set to adapt “The Day of Black Sun,” a two-part story from the original in which Aang, Sokka, Katara, Toph, and several of their allies invade the Fire Nation.

If the Netflix show were to skip “The Boiling Rock,” this would be the most logical place to bring Suki back. It could be revealed that Suki is being held in the Fire Nation capital, rather than the eponymous prison. While this would rob the Netflix adaptation of some great scenes and a solid side story, it would ultimately serve the same purpose: reuniting Suki with Team Avatar. Based on the timeline changes and mash-ups of episodes from Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2, this outcome seems likely to explain what happened to Suki.
