Superman has long since been the undisputed gold standard for power in the DC Universe. The Man of Steel has stood as the symbol of hope since his 1938 debut, and to uphold his standards of truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, he is equipped with an array of powers derived from his exposure to Earth’s yellow sun.
The Man of Steel possesses iconic powers such as flight, super-hearing, super-speed, super-strength, invulnerability, heat vision, and freeze breath, making him a powerhouse even among DC’s strongest heroes. However, Superman is not completely invulnerable, and some heroes can take him down either through mastery of magic, one of his notable weaknesses, overwhelming force, or overpowered abilities.
For this sole reason, this piece counts down seven Justice League members who possess the specific powers or mystical advantages that make them stronger than the Man of Steel. From master magicians and Lords of Order to god-tier characters whose powers render Superman’s signature invulnerability completely ineffective.
Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond / Jason Rusch)
Firestorm is a hero who commands respect with his powerful ability to reshape matter on a sub-atomic level. Firestorm derives his power from the Firestorm matrix, which fused two separate individuals into a single, nuclear-powered superhero. The Firestorm matrix makes it possible for Firestorm to perform subatomic transmutation and manipulation of matter.
While the matrix strictly forbids Firestorm from directly altering living tissue, it places no limits on the surrounding world. This ability has devastating implications, allowing Firestorm to generate any known element or isotope in the universe out of thin air. With this, he can materialize Kryptonite out of thin air, stripping Superman of his powers.
Furthermore, Firestorm can absorb and redirect various forms of radiation; this grants him the capability to replicate the radiation emitted from a Red Sun, effectively shutting down Superman’s powers. Depending on how they are utilized, Firestorm has abilities that would make defeating Superman less of a gamble and more of an inevitability.
Shazam
Shazam is one of the Justice League’s most deceptively powerful characters. Behind his childish demeanor lies a powerful champion of the wizard Shazam. By saying the magic word, “SHAZAM!” Billy Batson transforms into an adult superhero with six divine abilities: Solomon’s wisdom, Hercules’ strength, Atlas’ stamina, Zeus’ power, Achilles’ courage, and Mercury’s speed.
In his adult form, Shazam possesses raw strength, speed, flight, and invulnerability that match Superman’s, but the distinction lies in the source of their abilities. Superman derives his power from his ability to absorb solar radiation from the yellow sun, while Shazam’s powers are mystical in nature, deriving them from the wizard Shazam.
The mystical origin of Shazam’s power is a direct counter to Superman, as he has no defense against magic. With the power of Zeus, Shazam can call down Zeus’ Living Lightning, which can be used as an offensive weapon to shoot magical bolts of lightning that Superman cannot defend against.
Captain Atom
Captain Atom is one of the few members of the Justice League whose strength rivals Superman’s. He gained his powers after being subjected to a military experiment that fused an alien metallic alloy to his skin, tethering him to the Quantum field. He thereafter gained the power to manipulate matter and energy on a universal scale.
In addition to Strength and durability comparable to Superman’s, Captain Atom’s absolute mastery of energy absorption and manipulation makes him a uniquely dangerous threat to Superman. Because Superman is essentially a living solar battery, Captain Atom’s energy absorption allows him to drain radiation directly from Superman’s cells.
Alternatively, Captain Atom, similar to Firestorm, can mimic the radiation emitted by the Red Sun and flood the battlefield with red solar energy, capitalizing on one of the Man of Steel’s signature weaknesses. Which means at any point, Captain Atom can coat his strikes with red solar radiation, rendering Superman’s invulnerability ineffective.
Zatanna
Zatanna is arguably one of the most powerful magic users in DC and is one of the most terrifying threats Superman could ever face. She is a master of Magic, and through Logomancy, Zatanna can reshape matter, alter reality, and manipulate time simply by speaking her desires backward.
To make quick work of Superman, Zatanna can cast several spells, such as Stop or Sleep, and she can immediately immobilize the Man of Steel. Superman’s vulnerability to magic attacks makes this a notably unbalanced match-up. With Zatanna’s ability to materialize and manipulate matter at a conceptual level, she is limited only by her imagination.
Martian Manhunter
With strength that can contest that of Superman’s, Martian Manhunter (J’onn Jonzz) is one of the few members of the Justice League who can defeat the Man of Steel. Superman himself once famously admitted that J’onn Jonzz is “the most powerful being on the face of the Earth”. A closer look at his abilities reveals why this statement is fitting.
Being a physical match for Superman is already an amazing feat, but Martian Manhunter has an array of other abilities that make him a force to be reckoned with. His dense Martian physiology grants him strength, speed, and durability comparable to a Kryptonian’s; in addition, he has flight, invisibility, and phasing, and is a formidable telepath and shapeshifter.
Martian Manhunter essentially has a Swiss Army knife of abilities, making him a difficult opponent. It is because of his vast, versatile powers that he has been able to battle the entire Justice League on multiple occasions across different DC comic continuities. When a confrontation fails, Martian Manhunter can disable Superman with his telepathy.
Doctor Fate (Kent Nelson)
Doctor Fate’s mastery of the arcane arts puts him at the pinnacle of the supernatural DC Universe. Bound to the helmet of fate, the host, in this case Kent Nelson, becomes Dr. Fate, an agent for Nabu the Wise, a cosmic Lord of Order. This symbiotic connection grants Dr. Fate mastery over the mystic arts on a multiversal scale.
In a contest of strength, Superman comes out on top, but Doctor Fate does fight battles with brute force; he is a nigh-omniscient magic user who can bend reality to his will. Superman’s Kryptonian physiology grants him no protection against any number of spells Doctor Fate may use to incapacitate the Man of Steel.
As magic is one of the few things that can hurt Superman, he stands little chance against the very pinnacle of magic in DC, Doctor Fate. Banishing the Kryptonian to a dimension devoid of a Yellow Sun or conjuring up Kryptonite is a minuscule task for a Lord of Order.
The Flash (Wally West)
Speedsters in the DC Universe are extremely powerful and dangerous, not only because of their immense speed but also because of their connection to the Speed Force, which grants them abilities beyond superspeed. The Speed Force is an omnipresent, extradimensional energy field and a fundamental force in the universe, similar to gravity.
Wally West’s connection to the Speed Force is especially strong, earning him the mantle of the fastest man alive. Wally West isn’t simply fast; he can casually run at light speed, manipulate time, create speed mirages, and even run on air. Superman has super speed, but a conduit of the Speed Force easily surpasses the limits of his speed.
In addition to being fast enough to view Superman’s attacks in slow motion, Wally West has abilities that can completely neutralize Superman, such as the Infinite Mass Punch. The Infinite Mass Punch is a punch the Flash delivers by accelerating to just under the speed of light, allowing him to hit with the concussive force of a white dwarf star.
If Superman were somehow able to withstand a flurry of Infinite Mass Punches, The Flash’s ultimate trump card would undoubtedly put him above the Man of Steel. With the Speed Force, the Flash can steal momentum from living objects or entities. With a touch, the Flash can siphon the kinetic energy straight out of Superman’s cells, rendering him immobile.
