With the massive shifts that the action genre has seen in the last decade, it’s remarkable that a handful of stars are still able to command a certain degree of respect. Jason Statham, Liam Neeson, and Gerard Butler are among the very few stars who can still get action movies greenlit on the strength of their names. However, streaming has disrupted the market considerably. Most action hits these days land directly on streaming platforms, and the audiences that would come out in large numbers to theaters tend to stay at home. Alan Ritchson, for instance, has emerged as a bona fide streaming industry star thanks to hits such as Prime Video’s Reacherand Netflix’s War Machine. However, movies headlined by actors who’ve experienced box-office success in their careers still do extremely well at home, often giving competition to direct-to-streaming titles.
One of the biggest action blockbusters of the last two decades was headlined by Neeson. The movie turned his career around and established him as an action star. It also inspired numerous knockoffs that starred actors such as Kevin Costner, John Travolta, Michael Keaton, and Sean Penn. Neeson’s own hit spawned a franchise that includes two theatrical sequels and one television spin-off. In total, Neeson’s three films grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. But the first installment remains a classic, and it’s currently available to stream in the United States on Paramount+. But the film won’t stick around for much longer.

You Don’t Have Long To Watch Liam Neeson’s Action Classic on Paramount+
By now, you’ve probably guessed that we’re talking about Taken, which emerged as a word-of-mouth sensation in 2009. The movie was almost released directly on DVD — the equivalent of a straight-to-streaming debut back then. But it took off when it landed in theaters, grossing $225 million worldwide against a reported budget of $25 million. Both sequels, Taken 2 and Taken 3, grossed more than $300 million each. The first film was directed by Pierre Morel, and it now holds a 60% critics’ score and a terrific 85% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.
