Hideo Kojima Is Finally Giving P.T. Fans What They Want

[

Although P.T. has no shortage of fan-made spiritual successors or even players porting the game onto PC in an attempt to preserve the original experience, it’s still one of the greatest stories of ‘what could have been’ for the gaming industry. Even if we’ll never get to see the full vision that Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro had for the unique horror experience, not all hope is lost for the unforgettable demo.

Although P.T. is still in a permanent state of limbo after Kojima cut ties with its publishers, some recent details regarding a new horror game from the same minds that created the original demo have been screaming that it’s far more than just a simple spiritual successor.

After an interview between Xbox and Entertainment Weekly, fans have been eagerly picking apart the brand-new gameplay screenshot and additional details for the release of OD shared by none other than Geoff Keighly himself, which, despite saying in the EW interview that it’s “something no one has ever seen before,” still bears a striking resemblance to the canceled Silent Hill project.

With OD supposedly being so scary that Kojima had to implement gameplay mechanics that make it beatable for those who couldn’t handle it, combined with the eerily familiar setting of a photorealistic home, fans already have “high expectations,” and even started picking apart each and every detail of the screenshot to try to understand more about the upcoming horror experience.

Even if we still know painfully little about the actual story or gameplay of OD, fans are already convinced that “this is absolutely a PT successor,” and after learning about its unique development and real-world ghost inspirations, the upcoming horror game might actually go beyond its supposed inspirations.

Although PT‘s absolutely haunting atmosphere and unique narrative presentation that modern horror games still haven’t been able to fully replicate is a high bar to beat, the same interview saw Kojima saying that OD was made with the intention of wanting “to go beyond the limit of the ‘scariness’ that other games had reached,” offering a glimmer of hope to not just P.T. fans everywhere, but the horror genre as a whole.

Unfortunately, we’re still quite a way off from getting to play OD for ourselves when it eventually releases, as it has only just entered the full stages of production, but even with the long wait ahead, it’s hard not to get swept up in the excitement over players who can’t “wait to be traumatized a second time” after P.T.

Thankfully, if you haven’t played the original for yourself or simply want to live out the original P.T. experience before the release of OD, fans have been preserving the original game with remakes using the latest Unreal Engine 5, which offers a nearly one-to-one experience with the original game.
