Paramount’s 5-Part Sci-Fi Series Is Coming To Take Star Wars’ Crown

[

Star Wars has been having a spectacular run with TV shows lately, but Paramount is finally heating up the competition. While Star Wars’ initial success came from feature films, the movies haven’t been performing particularly well in recent years. However, there has been a surge in popularity with Star Wars’ TV offerings, thanks to incredibly popular shows such as The Mandalorian, Andor, and a handful of others that helped rebuild the franchise outside of the films.

But long before Star Wars moved into the TV space, Star Trek had cornered the market on sci-fi TV shows, with the entirety of The Original Series having already been released before Star Wars ever debuted on the big screen. While Star Wars has been making some waves with recent TV releases, Star Trek is coming back in a big way with one major release that could change the landscape of sci-fi TV.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to start releasing season 4 later in July, ahead of the show’s fifth and final season coming out later in 2027. This incredible series has had an incredible journey since it debuted in 2022, and despite coming to an end, the show is certainly outpacing equivalent projects from Star Wars currently being released.

Which Has The Better Modern TV Shows Overall: Star Trek Or Star Wars?

At present, Star Wars seems to have already released some of their best and most exciting TV projects. The Mandalorian was incredibly popular in early seasons, but that popularity started to dry up a few seasons in, and The Mandalorian & Grogu movie that was meant to expand on the story fell flat with audiences in a massive way, resulting in yet another flop for Star Wars on the big screen.

That being said, there is some excitement for the upcoming series, Maul: Shadow Lord, which will provide an insight into one of the most fascinating characters to be introduced in the prequel trilogy. Beyond that, Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi, could be another exciting project for fans of the animated shows, but it’s expected to be considerably less popular compared to the live-action Maul prequel.

Meanwhile, Star Trek appears to be having an exciting revival with renewed interest in the franchise and a handful of highly anticipated upcoming entries. Beyond the fourth and fifth seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds closing the book on one of the most intriguing new entries in the series in some time, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy also delivers a fresh view of the franchise.

While reviews for season 1, which came out earlier this year, were polarizing, the show has been renewed for a second season, and there is certainly room for the show to grow and become an important new arm of the wider franchise. With that in mind, it seems as though Star Trek and Star Wars are almost neck and neck as the pair prepare to showdown with their new releases.

At present, Maul: Shadow Lord is absolutely the most exciting new project to be coming from either franchise due to the fact that it has yet to be released, and thus has the largest potential to start strong, or suffer a similar fate to other Star Wars offerings in recent years. However, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has built a dedicated fanbase over time, with the story becoming all the more captivating over time.

Ultimately, it’s impossible to announce a winner at this moment, but there is a strong case to be made that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be taking back the crown in July, before the series comes to a close, and Star Trek shifts its focus to a new generation of stories. Meanwhile, Star Wars is still looking back at old characters to try to save the franchise.
