How Old Is The DCU’s Superman? (New Supergirl Reveals Explained)

[

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Supergirl (2026)

The DC Universe’s new Supergirl movie is now playing in theaters, giving audiences an even clearer idea of Superman’s age in comparison to his Kryptonian cousin. Supported by evidence in 2025’s Superman movie, the Man of Steel’s age in his next DCU adventure will likely create an interesting parallel with previous live-action Clark Kent.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as the titular Girl of Steel, Supergirl sees Kara Zor-El embarking on a cosmic adventure beyond Earth. Originally just partying on red-sun planets so she can get drunk, Kara ends up getting pulled into a major pursuit, helping young Ruthy Marye Knoll go after the villain known as Krem of the Yellow Hills, who also poisons Kara’s dog Krypto. That said, the movie also features some interesting reveals about Supergirl’s age in the DCU (as well as Kal-El’s).

While the exact year of Clark’s birth still hasn’t been fully confirmed, Supergirl narrows the possibilities quite a bit, seeing how the new DCU movie opens with Kara celebrating her own.

In the first act of Supergirl, Kara is confirmed to be celebrating her 23rd birthday while partying on a planet orbiting a red sun. This is because red solar radiation removes a Kryptonian’s powers as if they were back on Krypton, allowing Kara to get drunk when she otherwise couldn’t on Earth with its yellow sun and an accelerated metabolism.

Additionally, Kara later mentions to Ruthye that her cousin is around 8 years older than she is. Firstly, this confirms a major change in the DCU with the reveal that Kara was born after Kal-El (going back to her Silver Age origins). It’s also shown that Kara was born in Argo City years after it was separated from Krypton before its demise, having been protected by a force field created by her father.

Are you the Man of Steel — or still stuck in a phone booth?

In previous continuities, Kara was actually Clark’s older cousin sent to care for him as an infant, though prolonged stasis and/or a wormhole resulted in her rocket arriving on Earth much later (while still being physically younger). Now, the math is more straightforward in the DCU. If Kara is 23 years old and Clark is around eight years older, that makes Superman around 31-32 years old during the events of Supergirl.

That lines up nicely with the opening text seen at the beginning of 2025’s Superman, which stated that Kal-El arrived on Earth roughly three decades before the events of the first DCU movie.

Superman’s Age In Man of Tomorrow May Create An Interesting DC Movie Parallel

Assuming the DCU continues to progress in real time (as James Gunn has previously suggested), Clark should be approximately 32 or 33 years old by the time Man of Tomorrow releases in 2027. What’s interesting is that this would put David Corenswet’s Superman at roughly the same age Henry Cavill’s Superman was when he publicly debuted and battled General Zod in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

While their respective circumstances couldn’t be more different, it’s still a fun parallel between the two cinematic versions of the character. 33 is also the same age Jesus was when he was crucified and resurrected, a connection that was no coincidence for Cavill’s Superman, considering all the other ways Zack Snyder depicted him as a clear messianic figure in the DCEU.

Conversely, the DCU’s Superman will be in a very different stage of his superhero career. Rather than debuting to the world, Clark is already an established hero with trusted allies, well-liked by the public, and in a committed relationship with Lois Lane. However, there will be one interesting similarity with Cavill’s Superman beyond the two simply being close to the same age during the events of Man of Tomorrow.

Rather than facing General Zod, the DCU’s Superman will be taking on Brainiac, another cosmic villain with established connections to Krypton’s demise. Brainiac was also the intended villain for the planned Man of Steel 2 with Cavill. As such, it’s a pretty cool parallel coming down the line next year for the current Man of Steel and his predecessor.
