While the MCU experienced tremendous success during the Infinity Saga, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is highlighting how the wider universe needs to evolve in order to succeed moving forward. Tom Holland’s turn as Spider-Man has been historic for Marvel Studios, for the character of Spider-Man, and now, it’s set to pave the way for the future of the MCU too.
With the arrival of Spidey in the MCU resulting from a historic partnership between Marvel Studios and Sony, opening the door for this character to play a pivotal role in the sprawling universe while Sony retained the rights, we got a rebirth for a hero where previous adaptations stopped short of exploring his larger story. In both the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield adaptations, the stories began with the origin, and ultimately stopped abruptly despite having plans to further expand.
But after three successful solo movies, and a handful of appearances in other MCU releases, Tom Holland’s web-slinger is kicking off another trilogy with Spider-Man: Brand New Day. And not only that, but this movie marks a meaningful shift in how MCU movies have engaged with villains up to this point.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Establishes The First Official Rogues’ Gallery In The MCU
Every MCU hero who has had more than a single film under their belt has faced off against numerous enemies. In Iron Man’s trilogy, he faced Obadiah Stane, Ivan Vanko, and Aldrich Killian, and each rival met their fatal end at the climax of the film. But one of the defining characteristics of the comics upon which the MCU is based is the presence of a rotating, recurring cast of villains who make life hard for the heroes.
Well, up to this point, despite facing numerous bad guys, Spidey has yet to fight the same bad guy twice in a movie, but that is about to change in Brand New Day. This film will introduce a new cast of rivals, including Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, Ramrod, the Hand, and of course, Michael Mando returning to play the role of Scorpion.
Mando previously appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and while his mutation has yet to take effect, the fact that he will be the first recurring Spider-Man villain in the MCU marks the beginning of a brand-new era for these stories.
Rogues’ Galleries Could Be What The MCU Needs Most To Survive
While MCU TV shows like Daredevil: Born Again have focused multiple seasons on recurring rivalries, the MCU movies have been heading in a very different direction for almost twenty years. Even if a rival isn’t killed at the end of a film, there is a chance that they are permanently imprisoned, or in rare cases, like Loki and Abomination, they join forces with the heroes.
But as highlighted above, comic book stories rely on menacing recurring antagonists to build tension and keep the heroes on their toes. Hopefully, this will continue to be an important part of the Spider-Man stories, and it is easier to do in some ways thanks to his street-level nature, but there are many other projects beyond the end of the Multiverse Saga that could follow this example.
For instance, with the introduction of the X-Men into the MCU in Avengers: Doomsday, and the promise that the upcoming Saga will have a major focus on mutants, it seems highly likely that there will be two competing organizations, the X-Men, and the Brotherhood. While characters like Professor Xavier and Magneto are expected to align themselves in Avengers: Doomsday, their conflicting views will almost certainly see them at odds again in the future.
However, how that shapes up in the future of the MCU is uncertain as the soft reboot of Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to introduce a new cast of mutants to take the universe forward. But, The Fantastic Four has a notable rival in Doctor Doom, who it would make perfect sense to continue positioning as their ultimate foe. Yes, his plans may be thwarted by the end of Avengers: Secret Wars, but it would be an injustice to the legacy of the character if he were so easily and so quickly wiped off the board.
All things considered, the MCU has a bright future ahead if they can learn from Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s plan to implement longstanding rivals for Peter Parker, and it could be just the thing to save the MCU as a whole.
