Films don’t have to make sense to be fun. There’s a virtue in a movie, or two, being so utterly ridiculous and stupid that you just have to applaud them for making the decision and go with it. That’s exactly the case with this pair of cinematic masterpieces, which are swimming onto a new streaming platform later this week.
The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench begin streaming on HBO Max on July 1, and that’s good news, because it means you’ll get to see Jason Statham punch a giant shark in the face. How can anybody not cheer for that? The first movie arrived in 2018 and introduced Statham’s Jonas Taylor, a deep-sea rescue diver dragged into a mission involving a 75-foot megalodon. The second film took us into “The Trench”, which is a giant underwater world that’s full of even more giant sharks, and other prehistoric monsters. It is gloriously stupid, and we cannot recommend them enough. The films earned a combined $927 million worldwide, so that proves they work. And yes, the film has that iconic shot of a little girl looking out into the dark ocean with the world’s biggest shark staring right back at her.

Pitted against colossal Megs and relentless environmental plunderers, our heroes must outrun, outsmart, and outswim their merciless predators in a pulse-pounding race against time.”
Despite landing a rough 27% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, Meg 2: The Trench connected far more strongly with audiences, earning a 72% audience score. The audience consensus reads: “Once it gets going, Meg 2: The Trench delivers most of what viewers are looking for in a creature feature.”
Produced on a reported $129 million budget, Meg 2 ultimately earned $398 million worldwide, including $82 million domestically and another $316 million internationally. That made it the 19th highest-grossing movie worldwide in 2023.
