It’s wonderful to see Game of Thrones has managed to win back fans after a stinker of a season finale. Between the excellent House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the fantasy world has proved it still has plenty of life in it. There are also plenty of new games, such as Game of Thrones: Dragonfire.
And yet, the whiff of that season finale will likely linger forever. Fans have so, so many problems with the final episodes of the show, but one of the biggest points of contention is that Jon Snow didn’t get to kill the Night King, or even really face him one-on-one. Fortunately, this is something the upcoming Game of Thrones: War For Westeros has already managed to fix.
This upcoming strategy game is currently planned to release before the end of 2026. Developed and published by Playside, this is a basically Total War: Westeros, with a focus on the most iconic battles from the history of Westeros. The game’s reveal trailer, released last year, has already won fans over by giving them something they’d been asking for since 2019: a proper showdown between the Night King and Jon Snow.
“Just seeing Jon fight the Night King felt like justice for S8,” wrote one fan on YouTube.
“The fight between Night King and Jon Snow looks epic here. It is what the show should’ve been instead of the disappointment we got,” another added.
A third said: “At long last, we can fix the ending of Game of Thrones. The cinematic trailer gave us the duel the whole world had waited for.”
Of course, we should never judge a game by its cinematic reveal trailer too hard — let’s wait and see some real gameplay before we get too excited. But fans will be glad to know a big part of this game is the ability for us to rewrite the outcome of certain battles. So, yes, if you thought the climatic battle in Game of Thrones season 8 sucked eggs, you can switch it up.
“Classic real-time strategy in the world of Westeros,” Playside teases. “Conquer the Seven Kingdoms solo, or in treacherous free-for-all multiplayer. Command the Great Houses, rally iconic heroes, and rewrite the fate of the realm. Do you have the strength to seize the Iron Throne? In War for Westeros, chaos reigns in ruthless free-for-all battles where trust is fleeting and power is everything. Command the Great Houses in epic real-time strategy battles, forge strategic alliances, or weave deceit against your rivals.”
You’ll be able to lead the armies of House Stark, Lannister, and Targaryen, or even take control of the Night King himself and lead his army of the dead. Each faction will have its own heroes, abilities, and mechanics, and through this you can decide what happens, or doesn’t happen, to your favorite characters in historic Westeros battles.
Given that we haven’t heard anything aboutWar For Westeros since it was first announced at Summer Game Fest last year, I wouldn’t hold out too much hope for that 2026 release window… but it should be worth the wait. Game of Thrones should keep an eye on this one.
