Netflix’s Best Horror TV Show Of All Time Is About To Be Dethroned

[

Netflix is home to one of the best horror TV shows of all time, but it might be about to be dethroned by one huge arrival. Netflix continues to be one of the biggest and most popular streaming platforms, and it has maintained its place thanks to its original projects and the addition of more licensed content every week. Thanks to this, Netflix offers a variety of movies and TV shows from different genres, and when it comes to TV shows, a genre that often succeeds is horror.

Netflix has mostly stood out for its original horror TV shows, with some of its most notable projects to date being Midnight Mass, Archive 81, Stranger Things, and Marianne, all of them offering different types of horror. However, Netflix’s best horror TV show to date, as well as one of the best TV shows of all time, is Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House. Loosely based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name, The Haunting of Hill House follows the Crain family, who moved into the title mansion to renovate it and sell it.

However, increasingly disturbing paranormal phenomena begin to haunt them, culminating in tragedy. Years later, after another tragedy, the Crains are forced to confront their past at Hill House. The Haunting of Hill House holds a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s still the best horror show on Netflix – however, it might be about to be dethroned, as Netflix is adding Hannibal to its catalog very soon.

Hannibal Can Dethrone The Haunting of Hill House As The Best Horror Show On Netflix

All seasons of Hannibal will be available to stream on Netflix on July 27, 2026, further elevating the platform’s horror TV content. Created by Bryan Fuller, Hannibal is based on Thomas Harris’ novels Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising, and follows gifted FBI profiler Will Graham (Hugh Dancy). Graham is recruited to investigate a serial killer, and his superior decides to have him supervised by forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).

Lecter is secretly a serial killer and cannibal, and though he tries to manipulate the FBI, he ends up building a strong bond with Graham. Hannibal is one of those rare cases of a TV show that’s perfect from start to finish, with each season getting better and better. Unfortunately, despite its quality, Hannibal was canceled after three seasons due to low viewership, but with time, it has become a cult classic.

Hannibal is widely regarded as one of the best TV shows of all time and has been praised for its depth, cinematography, approach to the characters, the dynamic between Graham and Lecter, the complexity and development of its characters, and its storytelling, especially how it addresses Lecter’s cannibalism. Hannibal is the one horror show that could dethrone The Haunting of Hill House once it arrives on Netflix, but they could also share the throne thanks to their different types of horror.

The Haunting of Hill House Is Still The Best Netflix Original TV Show

Even if Hannibal manages to dethrone The Haunting of Hill House as the best horror TV show on Netflix, Flanagan’s masterpiece still holds a unique title. Hannibal is a network TV show, having aired on NBC and now finding a new home on Netflix, meaning it’s not a Netflix original show. The Haunting of Hill House, on the other hand, does belong to the family of Netflix original TV shows.

The Haunting of Hill House, along with its stand-alone companion, The Haunting of Bly Manor, led to Mike Flanagan signing an exclusive deal with Netflix to produce TV shows. The result was five TV shows that form Netflix’s best horror franchise, and which further cemented Flanagan as one of the modern masters of horror. Although Netflix has other great original horror TV shows, The Haunting of Hill House continues to be the best of all.

The Haunting of Hill House and Hannibal can definitely co-exist and share the throne as the best horror TV shows on Netflix, offering different types of horror, but both with high narrative and visual quality. It’s to be seen if there could be another horror show, original or not, that could dethrone these two, but, for now, Netflix is about to have the best horror catalog in the world of streaming.
