Over a decade later, True Detective remains one of HBO‘s most celebrated shows. Starting in 2014, the anthology series has received praise for its premise, which has delivered some of the best performances ever. The show’s mysterious nature, coupled with some supernatural elements, makes for an engaging watch. True Detective needs seasoned performers, and the show was in luck in its first season when it cast Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey in the lead roles. They set the tone for the iconic series that has aired four seasons so far, with a fifth in development.
Harrelson and McConaughey’s Hart and Kohle remain one of the best duos to grace television, and True Detective has not achieved their onscreen chemistry in later installments. The actors had been close friends for many years, even before they starred in True Detective, and their relationship grew even more intriguing when an unlikely revelation suggested they might be related. It has never been confirmed whether they share any DNA, but it’s intriguing enough that Apple TV is willing to bet the story is compelling enough for TV.
Enter Brothers, an upcoming Apple TV comedy series starring Harrelson and McConaughey. The show leans into this wild turn of events by having the actors play fictionalized versions of themselves, Woody and Matthew. It explores their wild lives, which grow wilder when Ma Mac (Holland Taylor), Matthew’s mother, reveals they might be brothers. Apple TV announced that the eight-episode first season of Brothers will debut globally on Wednesday, September 23. The show follows a typical rollout for new Apple TV shows, with the first two episodes on launch day, followed by one new episode every Wednesday, culminating in the season finale on November 4, 2026.

Who Is Behind ‘Brothers?’
Since this story leans heavily into their personal lives, Harrelson and McCounaghey are also credited as executive producers. Lee Eisenberg, known for executive-producing shows such as The Office, Jury Duty, and Little America, serves as the showrunner and executive producer of Brothers. Other cast members include Natalie Martinez (Bad Monkey) as Valentina McCoughney; Brittany Ishibashi (Runaways) as Joy Harrelson; Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton (Sweet Magnolias), and Noah Carganilla play Matthew’s kids;Highdee Kuan (The Brothers Sun) and Oona Yaffe play Woody’s kids. The official series description reads:
Brothers follows McConaughey and Harrelson, who play fictionalized versions of themselves, and whose lifelong friendship is thrown into chaos when they uncover a decades-old secret: they might actually be brothers. After Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart, he loads up the family and heads to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch.
But what begins as a healing getaway quickly spirals when Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (played by Holland Taylor), accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret that the two friends might actually be brothers. As Woody turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, Matthew finds himself juggling an entirely different identity crisis: a potential run for Governor of Texas. The result is a heartfelt, chaotic and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame and the messy line between myth and reality.
