‘It’s Not Like That’ Canceled By Prime Video After One Season

EXCLUSIVE: It’s Not Like That’s Rotten Tomatoes score will stay at a perfect 100%, and the series’ leads Malcolm (Scott Foley) and Lori (Erinn Hayes) will remain star-crossed lovers. That is because Wonder Project’s faith-based family drama will not be getting a second season by Prime Video, Deadline has learned.

The news comes more than a month and a half after It’s Not Like That was released globally on Prime Video. The series is part of the streamer’s ongoing collaboration with Wonder Project, which also is behind House of David. Both faith-based dramas launch exclusively on Wonder Project’s Prime Video add-on subscription channel first; It’s Not Like That debuted on the service Jan. 25 before getting a wide release on Prime Video May 15.

House of David, whose second season premiered on the Wonder Project add-on in November and on Prime Video in late March, is getting a third season, I hear.

While the two series were commissioned by the previous Prime Video regime, Amazon MGM Studios Head of Global TV Peter Friedlander has longstanding relationship with Wonder Project CEO Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten from their time together at Netflix.

The cancellation of It’s Not Like That is somewhat surprising. In addition to its strong reviews, it seems to have been doing well. Prime Video is not releasing viewership numbers but it started putting out weekly Top 10 rankings and the first one, which came out June 3, featured It’s Not Like That at No.9 on the global series list.

The drama also has remained a fixture on Prime Video’s Daily Top 10 series list in the U.S., currently at No. 5.

From Parenthood alums Ian Deitchman and Kristin Robinson, It’s Not Like That follows Malcolm (Foley), a pastor who is a recently widowed dad of three, and Lori (Hayes), a newly divorced with two teens, as they navigate their newly minted singledom with parenthood.

The finale ended with Malcolm finally professing his feelings for Lori. It turned out to only be in his head, with Lori instead sharing with him her dilemma whether to move on with her new boyfriend or reunite with her ex-husband. Malcolm saved his confession for another time — which will now never come.

Additional cast includes J.R. Ramirez (David Soto), Caleb Baumann (Merritt Soto), Cary Christopher (Justin Jeffries), Leven Miranda (Flora Jeffries), Liv Lindell (Casey Soto), and Cassidy Paul (Penelope Jeffries).

Deitchman and Robinson served as showrunners alongside Garrett Lerner. The three executive produce alongside Jon Erwin, Justin Rosenblatt, and Jon Gunn for Wonder Project, Foley, Brad Silberling, Alex Goldstone for 42 & Anonymous Content and Kingdom Story Company. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
