Star Wars Official Luke Skywalker Recast Is A Hit With Fans

[

When you picture Luke Skywalker in your head, you are no doubt imagining Mark Hamill. Playing the role of the young Jedi in six official live-action Star Wars movies, Hamill breathed life into the character, who was first introduced way back in 1977’s Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

Beginning his life as a humble Tatooine farmboy, Luke Skywalker soon became one of the galaxy’s greatest Jedi alongside help from Princess Leia and Han Solo. Perhaps most remembered for his iconic scene alongside Darth Vader, who he soon discovers is his father, there is no denying that Luke Skywalker is one of the most iconic characters in movie history, and it is Hamill’s talents that helped bring the character to life before our eyes.

Although other actors have portrayed Luke Skywalker in various voice acting roles, Hamill has been our live-action version since the very beginning, which will make any replacement have very big shoes to fill. However, with the Star Wars universe set to continue and Hamill approaching his 75th birthday, it is safe to say that a replacement may be in order. Hey, at least it won’t be AI. We hope.

As well as starring in the large majority of live-action Star Wars movies, Luke Skywalker has also appeared in multiple video games set in the beloved sci-fi universe, with one being Star Wars Battlefront II.

Released back in 2017 as the fourth installment in the Star Wars: Battlefront series, Star Wars Battlefront II featured both a single-player and multiplayer campaign, and our young Jedi played a leading role in the former. However, Hamill did not return to voice Luke Skywalker on the occasion. Instead, the honor went to prolific voice actor, Matt Mercer.

That being said, it seems as though fans were on-board with this recast, as now, almost a decade on from the launch of Battlefront II, praise is still being received for Mercer’s performance.

Over on Twitter/X, one user recently shared, “I think this is the perfect case for recasting Luke,” alongside a video of Battlefront II’s Luke in action. “This doesn’t look or sound like Mark Hamill. But this *is* Luke Skywalker. The exact look or voice doesn’t matter as much as long as the actor embodies the character. It can be done.”

The comments were soon filled with praise for Mercer’s iteration of Luke, with one comment reading, “[Matt Mercer] did a wonderful job for the brief moment he was Luke.” Another asked, “Why does Anakin get multiple actors, but Luke has to be locked on Hamill?” One additional comment read, “Say what you want about the game, they NAILED Luke’s personality and values. This felt like the truest interpretation of Luke after Return.”

It is no easy task to recast such an iconic character, but it seems as though DICE may have just nailed it with the addition of Matt Mercer to the team. What this means for the future of the Star Wars franchise, however, remains to be seen.
