In 1966, Star Trek: The Original Series first beamed down to television sets nationwide. Now, as the 60th anniversary of its network television premiere draws near, the series is coming home again in an exciting new way.
All three seasons and 79 episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series are coming to Blu-ray in a new box set for the show’s 60th anniversary. There will be standard Blu-ray and DVD editions of the set available everywhere physical media is sold, but online mega-retailer Amazon has an exclusive set that will feature all the bells, whistles, and emergency klaxons. That includes deluxe collector packaging; a set of lobby cards that feature both notable moments from the series and behind-the-scenes details; and a miniature Tiny Vinyl record with the show’s iconic Alexander Courage theme tune and distinctive sound effects. The set will be released on September 8, the 60th anniversary to the day of Star Trek‘s debut on NBC. The date has since been designated “Star Trek Day,” and is often used by Paramount as a springboard to promote the franchise.
What Is ‘Star Trek: The Original Series’ About?
Created by Gene Roddenberry and set in the 23rd century, when humanity has united and become part of the peaceful, star-spanning United Federation of Planets, Star Trek chronicles the adventures of the USS Enterprise, a ship in the Federation’s Starfleet that explores new worlds and new civilizations. Under the command of the maverick James T. Kirk (William Shatner), as well as his science officer, the eminently logical half-Vulcan Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and his irascible chief medical officer Leonard “Bones” McCoy (DeForest Kelley), the ship explores both intriguing science fiction concepts and tackles the hot-button social issues of the day, including racism, war, and fascism. Never a huge hit with general audiences, the show built a devoted fanbase that grew when the show’s reruns dominated syndication; it eventually spawned a full media franchise.
Star trek fans also have the upcoming 4th season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds to celebrate. The series takes a look at the adventures of the Enterprise and her crew under the captaincy of her original commander, Christopher Pike (Anson Mount); Pike’s eventual fate is well-known to Trek fans and to Pike himself as the show heads into its penultimate season. It will premiere exclusively on Paramount+ on July 23.
The Star Trek: The Original Series 60th Anniversary Collection will go on sale on September 8, and is available for pre-order now. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
