Last week, the world learned of the 78th annual Primetime Emmy Award nominations, with plenty of shocks and snubs leaving jaws on the floor. Hacks smashed the record for most nominations for a comedy series with 24, with Jason Bateman scoring a surprise Best Actor nod for Black Rabbit, and Ryan Murphy‘s critical disaster All’s Fair somehow earning two nominations for best contemporary hairstyling and best contemporary makeup. But of all the surprises, the most heartwarming was the inclusion of Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox in the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series category.
Fox’s first nomination since 2016, and an eighteenth career nod in total, was for his brilliant role in the Apple TV hit Shrinking, which debuted its third season earlier this year. In total, Shrinking took home an impressive ten nominations from the recent announcement, including nods for cast members Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Michael Urie, and Jessica Williams. Season 3’s ten nominations improve on the seven for Season 2, and help push the show forward in the hunt for its first win.
Such success during last week’s nominations was well deserved for Shrinking, which earned widespread praise for its hilarious and heartwarming third outing. “Shrinking Season 3 lovingly nudges us back to the real world, ready to face whatever lies ahead,” wrote Collider’s Meredith Loftus in her review, in which she awarded a 9/10. It’s been over three months since Shrinking Season 3 came to an end, and it isn’t just Emmy nominations worthy of celebrating. At the time of writing, Shrinking has officially passed the 750-day mark on the Apple TV top ten in the U.S., where it currently ranks in seventh place.

Is ‘Shrinking’ Returning?
In Loftus’ aforementioned review for Collider, she noted that Shrinking Season 3 marked the perfect endpoint for the show in its entirety. However, looking to cash in on its popularity, Apple TV has renewed the show for a fourth season. The fourth season will feature a spiritual reset via a time-jump, with Lawrence previously saying, “People shouldn’t be surprised if there’s a time jump and it feels like we’re telling a completely different story.”
