PlayStation Plus Adding 2004 PS2 Classic Completely Free

If you’re missing your “Old is Gold” library from the PlayStation 2 era, you’re in for a treat this July. Sony is adding a classic game to the PlayStation Plus catalog, and if you have the required subscription, you won’t want to miss it.

Initially announced during June’s State of Play, the iconic Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, originally released for Xbox, PlayStation 2, and PC in 2002, is making a comeback to Sony’s console platform. It’ll be available for “free” with the PlayStation Plus Premium/Deluxe subscription, likely starting July 21. This date may shift based on the region you’re in, as Sony is currently testing a phased release schedule in the US, UK, and Japan. So, these regions may get access to the game on a different date than the rest of the world.

For context, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy blends third-person shooting with powerful psychic abilities to offer a unique action experience. It follows the story of Nick Scryer, a special operative who wakes up with no memory of his past, trying to infiltrate a terrorist group called The Movement. Nick slowly starts to recover his memories, and with them comes a barrage of mental powers, including telekinesis, mind control, remote viewing, pyrokinesis, and aura vision. Expect to spend roughly 10–12 hours completing the game.

What distinguished Psi-Ops from other shooters of its time was its physics-based gameplay. Players could hurl enemies across rooms, manipulate objects, solve environmental puzzles, and combine firearms with psychic attacks to approach encounters creatively. The interactivity of the environments and the freedom to experiment made each combat scenario dynamic and rewarding.

The game also encourages experimentation by having players deal with encounters, not just combat. Unlike most retro mechanic-heavy shooters, it rewards creativity, whether it was with psychic powers, conventional weapons, or some combination thereof, so every firefight feels different, and the campaign has lasting replay value.

Originally, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy was well received for its unique mechanics, fun campaign, and memorable psychic combat. A planned sequel never came to fruition, however, leaving the game on a cliffhanger. Despite this, it has still remained a fan favorite over the years, with many players praising its unique gameplay and considering it one of the most underrated action titles of the PlayStation 2 generation.

While the game is technically free, you need to have an active Premium/Deluxe subscription to play it. That’s $19.99 per month, $54.99 per quarter, or $159.99 for a year. Extra and Essential members will not have access to free games that are exclusive to the Premium/Deluxe tier.
