The mystery surrounding the launch of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel continues on with no news of the highly anticipated release back during June’s Summer Game Fest. However, fans are not giving up hope, as another date looms which could see Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games make the announcement we have all been waiting for.
First launched back in 2023, Hogwarts Legacy went on to become the year’s best-selling game. Inspired by the book series by J.K. Rowling, yet set over a century before those events, the RPG allowed players to create their very own witch or wizard and become a fully-fledged Hogwarts student. However, with the threat of Dark Magic ever-present, you must decide whether to embrace it, or remain a hero in the story.
Despite its critical success, Hogwarts Legacy was criticized for its lack of post-game content, with Avalanche Software merely offering a small summer update as well as the addition of a Photo Mode. However, the pitchforks were soon lowered when it was revealed that a sequel was now in development.
As for what the sequel will include, as well as its potential time setting, remains a mystery, and so too does its release date. Despite reports suggesting that Hogwarts Legacy 2′s launch is set to “coincide” with the release date of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter television show, with the latter expected to begin airing this December, we are running out of time for the video game sequel to be announced.
With some fans expecting the Summer Game Fest to feature the highly anticipated announcement, it did not come to be, but there is an upcoming date which may just put all fears to bed: 1 September. Known in the books as the day Harry and his friends return to Hogwarts for a brand-new term, it has become known in the fandom as “Back to Hogwarts Day” with celebrations taking place each year. So, could this year’s Back to Hogwarts Day see Warner Bros. Games share news on Hogwarts Legacy 2?
As one fan said over on r/HarryPotterGame, “The Back to Hogwarts event on September 1 seems most likely or another State of Play later this year.” However, according to another user, the recent acquisition of Warner Bros. by Paramount could have a massive impact on the release of Hogwarts Legacy 2. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the game is postponed. Hogwarts Legacy was, several times. Paramount is set to officially take over Warner in September, and I’m pretty sure there will be a massive restructuring of Warner Bros Games after. While I don’t expect HL2 to be canceled, I do expect WBG to be severely gutted and that’ll likely delay any upcoming games.”
At the time of writing, there have been no official reports of the upcoming acquisition having any impact on the launch of the Hogwarts Legacy sequel. However, there has also been no information regarding the sequel at all. As such, it remains to be seen if 1 September will pass without any big announcements, or could it finally be the day we have all been waiting for?
