8 Essential Batman Video Games, Ranked

[

When it comes to the most popular superhero, it is usually down to a couple of names, including Spider-Man, Superman, and Batman. The first of the bunch is arguably the biggest nowadays, with new highly anticipated movies, fun animated shows, cool live-action spin-offs, and most importantly, video games. However, before Marvel’s Spider-Man video games, Batman was the top dog in that regard, always having a new title for fans to play.

Unfortunately, Batman games in recent years haven’t lived up to the hype, with titles such as Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League both flopping. Still, Batman has an immense gaming history which consists of some of the most influential games ever, which is why this list will feature 8 essential Batman video games. Based on aspects such as gameplay, design, narrative, visuals, originality, authenticity, how accurate it is, fan opinion, critical acclaim, and overall quality, these eight titles are must-plays for any Batman or video game fan.

‘The Adventures of Batman and Robin’ (1994)

The majority of this list includes some of the more predictable series, but one video game players might not have had the chance to experience is The Adventures of Batman and Robin. This 2D side-scrolling adventure game came out on the SNES, and remains the height of retro Batman gaming. This game is directly based on the critically acclaimed cartoon, Batman: The Animated Series, with players needing to stop a rotating cast of villains in distinct episodes as they terrorize Gotham City.

It may not be too popular of a video game, but Batman has a lot of classic games that are worth playing, with The Adventures of Batman and Robin specifically being essential. Even for a kids’ game, this title didn’t let up, delivering a surprisingly challenging experience with tough platforming design. The Adventures of Batman and Robin may not be perfect, but it has the exact same feel as the animated series, and that vibe alone makes it worthwhile, not to mention it was a well-polished game.

‘Lego Batman: The Video Game’ (2008)

In one way, it is unfortunate that six of the eight best Batman games come from two different gaming franchises, with the first being the Lego series. While all the Lego games are fun, only a few are essential, meaning the first had to be on this list. Lego Batman: The Video Game follows two different stories happening at the same time. One point of view comes from the villains who escape Arkham Asylum and form three syndicates: Joker, Riddler, and Penguin. The other storyline is about Batman and Robin trying to stop them.

As the first Lego Batman game, it had a few things it needed to polish, but it still had an overwhelming Batman feel that blends Tim Burton‘s world with the charming style of Lego. This is the most versatile Batman game, feeling both campy, gothic, mysterious, and dark at the same time, making it an essential Batman experience. Collecting characters is fun, and the puzzles are always a treat, but the dual narrative elevates this to become one of the best superhero video games of all time.

Queens, New York

🕷️ Spider-Man

You carry the weight of the world on shoulders that are younger than they should have to be — funny, loyal, and endlessly self-sacrificing.

  • You do the right thing not because it’s easy, but because no one else will.
  • You understand that responsibility isn’t a burden you choose — it’s one that finds you.
  • Whether it’s a neighbourhood mugging or a multiverse crisis, you show up.
  • Peter Parker’s lesson — that great power demands great responsibility — isn’t a slogan to you. It’s the code you live by, even when it costs you everything.

Hell’s Kitchen, New York

😈 Daredevil

You fight in the shadows between law and chaos, guided by a fierce moral compass that refuses to let the guilty walk free.

  • You use every tool available — your mind, your body, your faith — to protect those the system overlooks.
  • You’ve looked into the darkness and chosen not to become it, though the line has never been easy.
  • Matt Murdock’s duality — champion in the courtroom, devil in the alley — mirrors your own.
  • Relentless, conflicted, and unwilling to stop. That is exactly you.

Stark Industries, Malibu

🤖 Iron Man

Brilliant, driven, and occasionally insufferable — but always the person who solves the unsolvable problem.

  • You lead with your mind and back it up with resources, innovation, and a stubbornness that borders on heroic.
  • You started out looking out for yourself, but somewhere along the way the world became your responsibility.
  • Tony Stark’s arc — from ego to sacrifice — is your arc too.
  • You build, you plan, and when the moment comes, you’re willing to give everything. Because in the end, you’re Iron Man.

New York City

💀 The Punisher

You’ve been through fire that would break most people — and it did change you, completely. What’s left is unyielding, relentless, and operating by a code forged in grief.

  • You don’t ask for forgiveness, and you don’t expect gratitude.
  • You see a corrupt, broken world and you’ve decided to do something about it, consequences be damned.
  • Frank Castle’s war is born from love twisted by loss — and so is yours.
  • Uncompromising and unflinching — the world may not agree with your methods, but your conviction is absolute.

Asgard · Protector of the Nine Realms

⚡ Thor

Powerful, proud, and on a lifelong journey to become worthy of the legend you carry.

  • You lead with strength but have learned — sometimes painfully — that true greatness comes from humility and growth.
  • You’re larger than life, yet more vulnerable than you let on.
  • Thor’s story is one of transformation: from arrogant prince to worthy king, from isolated warrior to beloved protector.
  • You bring the storm when it’s needed — and the warmth when it matters just as much.

Brooklyn, New York · The Avengers

🛡️ Captain America

You believe in something bigger than yourself — and you fight for it even when the world has moved on and nobody else will.

  • You don’t bully the small guy, and you never stop when it gets hard.
  • Steve Rogers didn’t become a hero when he got the serum — he was always one. So were you.
  • Your strength isn’t in your fists; it’s in your refusal to compromise what’s right, no matter the cost.
  • In a world full of people taking the easy road, you’re the one who picks up the shield and stands up — every single time.

‘Batman: Arkham Knight’ (2015)

As previously mentioned, six out of the eight video games on this list all come from two different series, with one being the Lego franchise, and the other being the Arkham series. Batman: Arkham Knight is the conclusion to the renowned gaming franchise, pitting the Caped Crusader against his toughest opponent yet. Set during Halloween night, Scarecrow releases his fear toxin across the entire city of Gotham, forcing the citizens out. Now, it is just Batman and the mysterious Arkham Knight, alone to duke it out in a climactic battle.

Some aren’t a fan of the mandatory tank/Batmobile sections, and while they can drag on and ruin the flow, it doesn’t stop Batman: Arkham Knight from being a must-play game. As the finale of the series, it is important that players get to experience the conclusion that ends one of the most acclaimed gaming franchises. It improves on the established gameplay of the previous games and elevates the formula with stunning graphics, making Gotham City feel as real and immersive as ever.

5

‘Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’ (2026)

Most Batman games on this list came out in the 2000s and 2010s, with the interactive iterations of the character in the 2020s not having great results. However, the best of the decade came out this year, in 2026, that being Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. It brings together the most iconic outings of Batman and his rogue’s gallery, creating a grand story with familiar faces from different iterations. It follows the entire arc of Bruce Wayne and Batman, from his early years with the League of Shadows to the forming of the Bat-family and the rising conflict in Gotham City.

It may not be the best video game of 2026, but it is already the defining Batman experience in the modern age because of its blend of Lego visuals and charm alongside its iconic Arkham combat. It bridges the two best and most iconic Batman gaming franchises into one, making it an easy must-play for Batman or Lego fans. It abandons the typical Lego formula to hone the handful of characters and their skills, delivering a much more succinct design. The open world is an absolute treat to explore, mixing and mashing the best parts of Batman’s mythos to create a celebration of the character.

‘Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes’ (2012)

Following one Lego Batman game is another Lego Batman game, this time being the sequel to the original, Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes. Joker is on the loose again, but his latest scheme involves helping Lex Luthor and his mayoral campaign, leading to Batman and Robin reluctantly joining forces with Superman and the rest of the Justice League to stop this daunting duo from wreaking havoc on the world.

Instead of just playing as Batman and Robin, this game gives players an entire roster of superheroes, mainly the Justice League, offering a fun amount of variety. Like all the other Lego games, this one had the staple gameplay loop with charming characters, a distinct style, and engaging puzzle gameplay. However, Lego Batman 2: DC Superheroes was the first to introduce a fully explorable open-world, pioneering the future of Lego games.

3

‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ (2009)

Batman has always had excellent video games, but it really took a big leap with Batman: Arkham Asylum, the first of the Arkham games that shocked the world. Arkham Asylum is an island that contains the most dangerous criminals, and when Joker locks Batman inside the island, he is trapped with his worst nightmares. The clock is ticking as Joker develops a new chemical called Titan, but Batman is on the case.

Batman: Arkham Asylum pioneered the free-flow combat that has become so iconic, cementing itself as a gaming landmark of perfect combat. While the combat is a highlight with the brawling and fun gadgets, this game is also a masterclass of environmental storytelling and optimization, creating one of the best adaptations of Arkham, Batman, and his mythos. All in all, Batman: Arkham Asylum is one of the most influential video games ever, and thus, is also an essential Batman experience.

2

‘Batman: The Telltale Series’ (2016)

This list is crowded with Lego and Arkham games, but that is only because they are so good; for a nice change of pace, gamers should play Batman: The Telltale Series. Playing as both Bruce Wayne and Batman, players must balance the life between the two masks. From supporting Harvey Dent and his mayoral campaign to investigating Bruce’s own family history to dealing with the craziness of Gotham, there is always danger and mystery lying in wait.

Alongside The Adventures of Batman and Robin, Batman: The Telltale Series is the only other unique Batman game on this list. A lot of Batman games give players different tones and roles of the character, with this one pushing the audience into more of a psychological and detective role as they use decisions to shape the narrative. This interactive story-focused game is the most intimate view of Bruce Wayne yet, something that the other games don’t accomplish. Batman: The Telltale Series is a narrative masterclass and a welcome change of pace that presents one of the best Batman stories.

1

‘Batman: Arkham City’ (2011)

Batman: Arkham Asylum revolutionized gaming with its gameplay and worldbuilding, but Batman: Arkham City is still the most defining Batman game. With Hugo Strange walling off a portion of the city to create an open-air prison, Batman must navigate it to learn about the mysterious Protocol 10 while also trying to find a cure for the Joker blood that is in his system, which will kill him if he is too late.

Many prefer Batman: Arkham Asylum for its metroidvania gameplay and eerie vibe, but Batman: Arkham City improves on almost everything. Co-written by Paul Dini, this game has one of the best Batman stories, which uses its twists and turns to deliver a shocking development in the finale. The open world embodied the best of Gotham, leaving an authentic city that fans can spend hours immersing themselves in. Alongside the improved combat, phenomenal boss fights such as the Mr. Freeze clash, tense ambience, masterful worldbuilding, and innovative features, Batman: Arkham City isn’t just the quintessential Batman game; it is one of the best video games of all time.
