The day and age of the movie star may be long gone, but Tom Holland is currently showing the world that star-power is still a thing.
The English actor who burst on the scene with a fresh, new take on Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War has gone on to have a prolific career over the past ten years. From headlining new film franchises like Uncharted to doing some of his most powerful and woefully overlooked work in the Apple TV series The Crowded Room, Holland possesses a certain magnetism that most actors can only dream to exhibit, in turn elevating even mediocre projects to unexpected heights of quality.
At just 30 years old, Holland’s filmography has amassed a whopping $9.8 billion, a testament both to audiences’ interest in seeing him on the big screen and filmmakers’ willingness to have him spearhead some of the biggest projects of their career.
After nearly 15 years in the film industry, dating back to his first on-screen role in J.A. Bayona’s The Impossible, Holland breaks new ground this year by making a number of monumental career moves. Although the jury is still out on how these moves will ultimately pan out, it is clear that Holland has affirmed his status as the undisputed king of this summer at the movies.
Tom Holland Leads The Two Biggest Movies Of The Summer
Separated by just 14 days, two of the biggest movies of the summer, and arguably the year, will hit theaters and likely take the box office by storm. It is no coincidence whatsoever that Tom Holland stars in both of these movies.
This week, Tom Holland will grace massive IMAX screens around the world as Telemachus in Christopher Nolan’s epic drama The Odyssey. Holland receives second-billing, only dwarfed by star Matt Damon, amidst a stacked ensemble cast that includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Lupita Nyong’o, and his real-life wife and frequent onscreen partner Zendaya.
Two weeks later, Holland will swing back into theaters as Spider-Man, bringing everyone’s favorite web-slinger back to theaters for the first live-action Spider-Man movie in five years. Following the immense success and rave reviews of Spider-Man: No Way Home, anticipation is through the roof for what Holland and director Deston Daniel Cretton have in store for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Holland is far from the first actor to star in two big movies released in the same summer, but few, if any, actors in history have featured so prominently in multiple mammoth movies as anticipated and projected to succeed as him. This is no Kevin Hart featuring in Central Intelligence and The Secret Life of Pets, both of which released in the summer of 2026.
What Holland undertakes this summer is something entirely different – play integral leading roles in films breaking all kinds of box office records before their respective releases, are generating widespread conversations on social media, and, for many, are the exact reason why going to the movies is such an indescribably unique experience.
Tom Holland Becomes The Rare Actor Who Can Balance Prestige And Blockbuster
In looking at summer of 2026 for Tom Holland more generally, one will notice he is achieving a rare feat that many actors fail to land.
The Odyssey is a big-budget epic and will likely excel at the box office, but it will also pick up a number of Oscar nominations and is already cementing its status as yet another prestige film from one of cinema’s greatest filmmakers. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, meanwhile, is the kind of four-quadrant, crowd-pleasing blockbuster that will have audiences clapping and cheering throughout.
Needless to say, The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day are decidedly different movies. But in this difference lies a novel attribute of Holland’s – an ability to balance prestige, filmmaker-driven movies with large scale blockbusters.
Most of the most successful actors land in either, but not both, of these camps. For instance, Daniel Day Lewis and Denzel Washington are regular fixtures at awards shows but are hardly leading movies that break the bank at the box office. Conversely, Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth draw crowds when they appear, yet aren’t exactly associated with top-tier, awards-worthy films.
In starring in both The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Tom Holland is leaning into his Denzel Washington and Chris Evans, or his Daniel Day Lewis and Chris Hemsworth, if you will. The ability to fluctuate between two movies, gargantuan in their own right but for entirely different reasons, is a feat few have achieved, but one that Holland seems to have nailed this summer.
