Fans of Square Enix’s huge library of titles are constantly curious as to which titles it’ll remaster or even remake, especially with the likes of Final Fantasy 7 Remake proving to be enormous successes, at least critically. Many would love to see further remasters of earlier Final Fantasy titles, obscure games buried beneath the weight of its far more popular games, or even the likes of Xenogears, which remains trapped on the original PlayStation.
Of course, recently, Square Enix has released new remasters, including a brand-new Final Fantasy X remaster. Typically, fans know about these remasters in advance or can predict which are on the way, but Square Enix’s latest set comes as a complete surprise. Those who absolutely adore this specific series will be overjoyed to see it come to the most recent generations of consoles, and those who’ve never played it finally have the greatest opportunity to try it out.
Square Enix has announced that both Octopath Traveler and its critically acclaimed sequel, Octopath Traveler 2, are getting remasters that are scheduled to launch later this year. The remasters are releasing exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2 and bringing with them a slew of changes that will update them for the current-gen systems. This comes off the back of Square Enix unveiling a brand-new Octopath Traveler game, as well as the release of Octopath Traveler 0 for the Switch back in 2025.
Octopath Traveler 2 is frequently hailed as one of the best JRPGs available on the Nintendo Switch, so it and its equally excellent predecessor getting remasters is definitely great for both dedicated fans and newcomers alike. The remasters are set to improve resolution and framerate, although Square Enix has remained somewhat tight-lipped about exactly what framerate and resolution it is targeting. Both remastered games will get individual physical and digital releases as well as a digital-only bundle.
It is worth noting that these new Square Enix remasters come with some caveats. Firstly, there is no upgrade path for existing owners of the original Nintendo Switch versions being offered. That means, if you already own either or both of Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2, you won’t be able to pay a reduced fee or even get a free update for the new versions. Additionally, save data from the original Switch versions can’t be transfered over to the Switch 2 editions. So, those half-way through a playthrough thinking of upgrading will still need to start completely from scratch.
Both Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler 2 on the Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $59.99 individually, or can be bought in that aforementioned digital-only bundle for $74.99. They are set to release on the Switch 2 on October 1, 2026, and are available to pre-order right now. It is a rather steep asking price for these titles, even if they are some of Square Enix’s best, but nevertheless a great option for those interested in getting the definitive version of both games.
