Halo: Campaign Evolved is officially kicking off its launch on July 28 this month in what will be the culmination of months of anticipation and hype buildup from developers at Halo Studios and XBOX. It marks Master Chief’s first appearance on a PlayStation console in history, as well as the return of the original game in the franchise that started it all way back in 2001.
Whether you’re highly skeptical about the campaign-focused remake or extremely excited about what’s on offer, there’s no doubt most Halo fans will be giving the remake a try regardless, if not just to see the classic experience reimagined in modern graphics. However, unfortunately, after a recent report, it appears that Halo: Campaign Evolved will officially be unplayable by millions when it launches later this month (via PushSquare).
According to a recent report that confirmed many gamers’ worst fears, Halo: Campaign Evolved will not be playable without a download and login, meaning an internet connection will be required to download and play the game at launch on both XBOX and PlayStation 5. This was first announced as a disclaimer on the physical edition box, but has since been confirmed by X user Does It Play?
Seeing as there are millions of people around the globe without a working internet connection or extremely poor or low connectivity, many gamers will not meet the requirements to download Halo: Campaign Evolved (via World Population Review). This comes on the heels of several disappointing updates from Sony regarding the phase-out of physical discs in 2028 after a slow burn campaign to shift to digital-only, including the launch of PS5 Pro without a physical disc drive.
While Halo: Campaign Evolved will be sold at retail for both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5, the boxed version serves primarily as an installation disc rather than a fully self-contained copy of the game. Microsoft’s official store pages note that all downloads and updates require a broadband internet connection, while players will also need to sign in with a Microsoft account before playing.
Further, on PC, Halo: Campaign Evolved requires 100 GB of available storage, making it one of the largest Halo releases to date, although the final install size on consoles has yet to be confirmed publicly.
Halo: Campaign Evolved launches worldwide on July 28, 2026, with five days of early access beginning July 23 for Premium Edition owners. It marks the first Halo title to launch simultaneously across Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Steam, the Xbox app on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and Xbox Game Pass, reflecting Microsoft’s multiplatform strategy that may or may not be getting the axe in the years ahead.
Notably, while exact download times will vary depending on connection speeds, a 100 GB installation could take well over three hours on a 100 Mbps connection, around 13–14 hours on a 20 Mbps connection, and more than a full day on a 10 Mbps connection, which highlights why Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s download requirement has become a major concern for players with limited or unreliable internet access.
