Christopher Nolan is back with another movie, and The Odyssey marks the start of a new era for the director, and it could not be more exciting. Only a select list of creatives has achieved as much as Nolan has, given that he is considered by many to be one of the best directors of all time. It is easy to understand why.
Nolan can excel with completely different genres, using practical effects to the highest level possible, which has become quite special in an age where Hollywood more often than not chooses to rely on CGI. Nolan and only a few other filmmakers, such as Denis Villeneuve or Quentin Tarantino, have managed to make every single new movie they release feel like an event.
Looking at Nolan’s list of movies, I’m sure anyone can understand that. Nolan ventured into the DC world and delivered a grounded superhero trilogy with some of the best Batman movies to date, including the very best: The Dark Knight. He has excelled with sci-fi stories like Inception and Interstellar, thrillers like Memento and Insomnia, and many more.
Always changing, Nolan’s openness to embracing different genres has made him one of the most interesting directors to follow in the industry. This is a person who can make Oppenheimer, a complex biopic, gross nearly $1 billion. Nolan is always experimenting, and that is precisely the case with The Odyssey, his most ambitious movie yet, and it is already working extremely well.
The Odyssey Is Christopher Nolan’s First Fantasy Epic
After venturing into many different genres, The Odyssey marks a first for Nolan, with the director now tackling a fantasy epic with one of the genre’s most iconic stories. For someone who always tries to search for realism and a grounded approach even when dealing with sci-fi concepts and a superhero franchise like Batman, this is a major shift for Nolan. The Odyssey fully includes gods and fantastical beings into its story. Viewers checking it out in theaters this weekend will be greeted by characters like the goddess Athena, the sorceress Circe, a Cyclops, the gigantic Laestrygonians, and many more.
If it were anyone else, one could assume that to bring such a fantastical world to life, as franchises like Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series do, it would be necessary to come up with a CGI-heavy approach. However, this is Nolan we are talking about. As such, moviegoers can expect practical effects to be used to their limits, with Nolan coming up with large-scale sets, giant animatronics for fantasy beasts, filming on location in the water, and more to make this fantasy epic the best and most authentic it could be. Nolan’s new era is impressive.
The Odyssey’s First Major Wins Show The Move Worked
The Odyssey might only be released in theaters this Friday, July 17. That said, ahead of its theatrical debut, the fantasy epic is already showing signs that Nolan’s new era could end up being his best yet, which is saying something. The reviews for The Odyssey are out, and at a sky-high 96% critics’ score based on 226 reviews at the time of writing, not only has the 2026 movie obtained the Certified Fresh label, but The Odyssey also currently stands as the best-reviewed Nolan movie of all time. It beats Memento and The Dark Knight, both of which stand at 94%.
That is not the only record The Odyssey is breaking for Nolan. Ahead of the film’s debut, Deadline has reported that the fantasy epic is projected to have a global opening weekend of over $200 million. This would make it the biggest opening in Nolan’s career, as The Odyssey would leave behind Oppenheimer‘s outstanding $181.1 million global debut. As such, Christopher Nolan’s new era could not be off to a better start than what we are seeing for The Odyssey right now.
