Supergirl’s Next Appearance Stars Iconic Villain, DC Confirms

[

DC has confirmed that in Supergirl’s next appearance, she’ll face down a recurring Superman villain with a long history of cinematic appearances, going back to 1978’s Superman: The Movie.

Superman’s cousin Kara is famously the only recurring DC hero who actually experienced Krypton’s culture. Clark left his home planet too early to have any actual memories, while Supergirl carries the trauma and loss of seeing her entire culture wiped from the face of the galaxy. Tragically, her next appearance will see her fight someone with the exact same experience.

That’s because Supergirl is about to go up against Kryptonian villain Ursa – likewise a survivor of Krypton, but one who has dedicated her life to subjugating other cultures in the name of her fallen world.

Supergirl to Battle Iconic Superman Villain Ursa

Relatively unusually, Ursa is a character who appeared on film before she existed in the comics, appearing as a criminal in league with General Zod in Superman: The Movie, played by Sarah Douglas. In 2006, DC debuted an essentially identical character named Faora in the comics (played by Antje Traue in 2013’s Man of Steel) and fully debuted Ursa as her own character in 2007, including her role as essentially the evil Supergirl to General Zod’s dark Superman.

Now, the two will come to blows as part of DC’s ‘Kingdom of Zod’ crossover story. Solicit information for Supergirl #17 confirms that Kara and Ursa will engage in a battle through time, with the two Kryptonian survivors revisiting an earlier version of their home planet. DC teases that their time-battle may end up changing modern-day canon.

FAMILY FEUD IN TIME! After the shocking events of last month’s crossover, Ursa and Supergirl are on a time-traveling battle to Krypton’s past! They have beef with each other, but they must be careful not to get lost in time! Or, y’know … accidentally rewrite time again! The rest of Super-Force are either locked up in the Kryptonite Kingdom, injured, or fighting a losing battle to stop the spread of Zod’s deadly K-Zone!

While Supergirl was saved from Krypton’s destruction by her parents, Ursa survived because she was banished to the extra-dimensional Phantom Zone thanks to an attempted insurrection. In recent comics, Ursa allied with and later turned against Zod, but appears to once again be a trusted lieutenant as of ‘Kingdom of Zod.’

But while Supergirl and Ursa are enemies in the modern day, there’s reason for both of them to want to save Krypton. Could a battle through time tempt Supergirl and Ursa into a history-changing alliance?

While Supergirl will battle Ursa in Supergirl #17, the prior issue will be the first real test of her new Super-Force team. The group assembled during Supergirl’s most recent adventure, and includes a variety of heroes including Lena Luthor, Lana Lang, Thundergirl and more.

While the various heroes of Super-Force have fought evil before, they have no experience working as a unit, so going up against supreme tactician General Zod will be a baptism of fire – one which they won’t necessarily all walk away from.

‘Kingdom of Zod’ is coming soon, and will pit Supergirl against her dark opposite, the Kryptonian warrior known as Ursa. Meanwhile, Supergirl‘s newly assembled team Super-Force will be put through their paces against one of the most powerful villains in DC lore.

Supergirl #16 is coming August 12 from DC Comics, following by Supergirl #17 on September 9.
